"I'm sorry I'll have to call you back. Something terrible is about to happen."

I got off the phone, popped a xanax, and called my mother.

"Oh hi honey! I was just watching a report about an accident on the Van Wyck! You're not calling from the Van Wyck are you? Oh my god you are! I KNEW SOMETHING LIKE THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TODAY! I FOUND A DEAD BIRD ON THE DECK!!!"

"Mom. Mom! MOM!!! I'm not on the Van Wyck!"

"What is it then? I just put dinner on the table. FRANK, LET'S EAT!"

Frank is Mom's boyfriend. He is a vegan, even more excitable than she is, and violently opposed to hunting or killing of any kind. The dude picks up stink bugs he finds in the house and tenderly puts them back outside.

"Mom, have you looked outside recently?"

"Frank just went outside to grill portabellos. Why?"

At this moment, Frank came storming into the house. The door slammed, then slammed again. I could hear him yelling incoherently and throwing what could only be portabello mushrooms against the wall. Mom of course also started screaming in response. But I knew what the problem was. They live across the street and he must have seen what I saw.

A deer, strung by the hind feet, gutted, still steaming and hanging from his brand new neighbor's front yard tree.

This is my entry for @mariannewest freewrite challenge from yesterday. Took me a while to get to it. https://steempeak.com/freewrite/@mariannewest/day-502-5-minute-freewrite-wednesday-prompt-let-s-eat
Thanks for reading it!

The image is mine of the closest thing to a deer hanging from a tree that I have in my phone. At least it has mushrooms in it.

Dark and funny... you are a treasure. Xx

What do Portobello thrown against a wall sound like??

It's nice to know you were that engaged in the story! A pillowy smushing sound? Only after it was done did I think that they would make a sound she couldn't have heard over the phone, but this is pacifist Frank, so it had to be something harmless. I could have said they were marinated to make them a little heavier gushy dripping sounding.

Oh the carnage, the butchery, the savagery- LOL! - and the closest thing you could find, the mushrooms under the tree. I would swear you were an Aussie, with that quirky wit and humor.
It does seem unorthodox to gut a deer in a residential area. (Is it even legal?) Makes for a great story, legal or not!

Depends on the zoning I'm sure. Thanks so much for reading and appreciating! I have to get over to you and find out what's up with Jen-Ben et al.

I didn't post for two days!!
The story is playing out in my head, pieces going around like a kaleidscope, and I'm watching to see where the pieces land.
I really love the energy and humor in your writing - and right now I'm hating the dark, ponderous, massive feel of mine so far. My sister's body was found March 18, 1976, so this time of year gets to me even though I know to ignore calendars. The weather and other reminders sneak up on me. I guess we never totally get over stuff like this; we just go on, and things leak out at the seams from time to time. (Ugh. Awful visual, that.) Must find more fun stuff to read now!!

Oh my I had forgotten that! oh! I can't imagine how you are writing this story, which so far does not have a sinister feel to it. oh I am going to be reading it very differently now, on the edge of my seat, exactly where your characters are trying very hard not to be. oh!

LOL! I love your reaction. :)
Real life is so brutal. Ever read "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold? International best seller. I hated it. Loved it for the most part but hated more parts than I liked. (If that makes sense.) I hated Twilight even more. Both books drove me to write a novel, which turned out worse than Bones + Twilight put together. :) I'm terrible at plotting. Need a co-author. Thanks for reading and commenting!

And I am well aware you didn't post for two days! It seems a bunch of people took a day off. Maybe it's a little March Madness Slump.#mmfan

It was Ash Wednesday, though that was not my excuse... I was just dreading mass (I am no fan of Lent and I attend church only because my husband wants me to and it's not that awful to attend. I get to sit next to him for an hour and meditate, kinda/sorta.) Thanks for noticing I took the day off! LOL
