5 Minute Freewrite: Friday - Prompt: Deep Space

in freewrite •  6 years ago

We often do not think that what happens in deep space will have an effect on our lives but the truth is that it really does. Our little blue marble in the galaxy is constantly bombarded by radiation from our Sun and other cosmic radiation. Collectively, this is known as space weather. Fortunately for us we are provided with a couple layers of protection from this deep space threat. First, we are protected by our planet's magnetic field. This shields us from much of the Sun's dangerous radiation. Secondly, we are also protected by our Sun's magnetic field which helps deflect some radiation from other stars. Unfortunately, both of these fields have diminished in strength over the last 100 years so it probably is a good time to have that backyard bunker installed. I've heard Atlas Survival Shelters makes good ones.

I've heard the wealthy are already building homes in the Utah mountains that are partially buried with bomb-shelter thick walls.

I know! I used to live in Grand Junction, Colorado and I've heard that too. It makes you wonder if they know something that we don't. :-)

Yes, maybe? I do hope they're just thinking better to be safe than sorry, but who knows? Sadly, it wouldn't be a surprising revelation.

I do know that Utah, Western Oregon and Washington along with Detroit, MI areas were slated as the best places in the U.S. to be as things heat up (coming out of European climate studies) so perhaps that's why?
