Five Minute Freewrite: Shades Of Thumps In The Night

Freewrite prompt is Shade.

Shade can be interrupted many ways.

Shade from the sun, shades of colors but I thought of Shade as a ghostly figure.

Hearing the thump, thump, thump, Martha started wringing her hands hoping her prayer was heard. At that moment, the chandelier above her head swayed slightly and the lights blinked on and off.

The Shade’s thumping always had an effect on the electrical current in the house. Light bulbs would explode and the soft country music sounds on the radio turned to static.

Martha had lived in the house for two years with her elderly father. He had poohhooed her worries that the house was haunted and claimed he never heard the thumping of something going up the stairs at 11 o’clock every night.

There were times during the day Martha had caught glimpses of a shadow out the corner of her eye and she wondered.

“Was this Shade a lost soul trapped in an never ending cycle of reliving his earthly life?”

Reaching into her apron pocket, she breathed easier fingering her rosary beads.

Knowing she also was trapped in her earthly role, Martha held her rosary beads close and prayed for protection.
