Freewrite: Mosquito Rant

Mosquitoes are the subject of my weekend 5 Minute #freewrite post or should I say my Mosquito Rant.

Old Man Winter has run out of cold air and the gentle breezes of the Spring Goddess are starting to awaken the land. With her warm caresses comes the ants, insects, black flies and mosquitoes.

Living in the country the flies love the clean fresh air. The house flies will take over the house if you are not on them and make sure the windows have screens and the doors are closed.

“Shut that blasted door! Were you born in a barn?”

A familiar phrase shouted to youngsters for holding the door open and allowing the flies to come in the house.

June is the time here when the black flies start swarming around you every time you stay outside too long in one spot. Those little critters can bite you and you don’t even know it until you see the blood. If you have long hair they can get into that and you have to comb through your hair when coming into the house to get them out .

Mosquitoes...the worse of the worse. I know there must be a reason for their god-given existence but I don’t know what it could be. There’s more around now that the bat population has been decimated by the white nose syndrome. One bat can eat thousands of the little nuisances in a day.

When in season, these long legged blood drilling devils can attack and suck some blood out of you the minute you step outside, leaving a itchy welt. I usually rub some vinegar on the spot to stop the itch.

I feel for the animals in the woods getting bitten. Often this is the reason the moose and deer come out to the roadways hoping to get away from the flies but may end up getting killed by a vehicle.

Eventually one knows what to wear to fool the mosquitoes. Long sleeves and light colors help. There’s also netted hats and jackets. I have lemon balm plant by the deck that they don’t like. Sometimes I rub the oil of the plant on my skin to discourage the mosquitoes.

There's commercial sprays and lotions (known as fly dope) to keep the mosquitoes away from you.

If you chose the countryside to reside there are many perks like clean drinking water, fresh air, less traffic ...and those blasted mosquitoes!
