5 Minute Freewrite - Prompt: Bowl

Merryn seethed as she dug through her cupboards. She was going to kill Lucas the next time she saw him. She had asked him for help, not more work. Her boss definitely owed her this time. If the department weren't so desperate, she never would have contacted him. Not after the now-infamous bakery incident.

She slammed five cans of tuna onto her counter, each one slightly past its prime. She had purchased them years ago, just after transferring to the Preternatural Crime Unit, as her emergency food supply. If the newly formed unit hadn't worked out, that tuna would have had to last until she found herself a new job.

"I can't believe it has its own bowl," she grumbled as she emptied the cans into the exquisite stoneware. The swirls and shapes painted around the rim seemed to dance under the bright kitchen lights.

She carried the bowl into the living room and set it down before her new houseguest, her anger melting into something close to raw fear. The enormous cat narrowed its eyes and Merryn looked down before she gave in to the urge to flee.

The cat was easily the size of a lion and sported a mottled brown-and-grey coat. While the size of the creature was enough to make Merryn uneasy, it was the beast's eyes that were the most unsettling. Situated in two pools of inky blackness, his slit pupils were fiery red and flickered as though they were lit by two flames. And as she kept her gaze fixed on the bowl at his feet, she noticed that the pattern decorating the bowl was flickering in the same manner.
