The dog, for lack of a better description, let out a low, rumbling growl that seemed to reverberate throughout the room. There was a part of Karen, a primitive part, that realized she could be this creature’s lunch. She felt she needed to run from that sound, but she was also fascinated. Just what was this creature, this gift that she had been given?
“What was that?” her boss demanded, his voice crackling through the phone.
“That was...whatever this is,” she answered, her voice less steady than she had hoped.
The dog shifted and lowered its head slightly, growling more softly this time. As it moved, Karen noticed tiny shards of blurry, inky blackness flake away from the creature’s body. She must have made some sort of sound as she watched the wisps of darkness float to her floor, even though she didn’t remember doing so, because her boss was suddenly shouting through the phone.
“Karen?! What is it?!”
“I think...” She squinted at the tiny black strands that had landed near the creature. “I think it’s...dog hair?”
There was a silence over the phone.
“Dog hair?”
“I think it’s shedding,” she answered.
The creature narrowed its eyes and let out a huff of air, snapping her attention back to it.
Note: This is a continuation of two of my previous Freewrites (Surprise coming for you! and Grounding). When I saw the prompt, I just couldn't help but to think of this! Also, I spent a little over 5 minutes this time around.
