5 Minute Freewrite - Prompt: Grounding

The creature that stood before her was roughly canine in shape, but it had retractable claws and was far too large to have fit into the box. Its fur was a matte, pitch black that seemed to give off a sort of mist that blurred the beast's form. And then there were its eyes. They glowed a sickly yellow-green and were staring directly at her. Karen froze.

“You still there?!” demanded her boss.

“Y-yes,” she stammered, finding it difficult to speak. She tightened her grip on the phone.

“Good. I guess if it hasn’t killed you yet then you’re probably going to be fine.”

“Fine?!” His words snapped her back to reality, pushing the fear aside. “This isn’t a happy little puppy. What am I supposed to do?!”

“Just talk to it,” he said. She could hear him rifling through drawers as he searched for his keys.

“Somehow, I feel like it’s not interested in grounding with me,” she said, her voice tense. “For one, it doesn’t seem capable of speech.” The creature growled again. “And I doubt we’d have much in common.”

“Have you tried?”

Karen inhaled sharply, preparing to argue, but the creature caught her attention. And that’s when she noticed that, despite its growling, it was still just standing there. Staring.

"So," she said, her voice shaking, "What brings you to my home?"
