It was Saturday morning and too early for whatever his neighbour was doing next door. The irritating rattling noise felt like it would split his head in two. He could imagine her in those screaming pink aerobics outfits she usually rocked in the weekends dancing around the sitting room with her old vacuum.
The whirling picked up the pace sending him to an agitated mode. He cursed between his teeth as he blindly reached out for a bottle of water on the stool next to his bed. He knocked a small clock standing next to the water accidentally forcing it to topple and smash below the bed. He cursed again but this time louder.
After a few gulps, the strength to swing his legs out of the bed was his. He collected his precious trash and tried to resemble it in his hands while shaking. Angry that he was clumsy enough to play a part in it's destruction. It was the first thing Jack ever bought him.
They were at their first holiday in Cape Town South Africa. An antique store tucked away in The Long Street Antique Arcade caught Jack's eye and dragging him by the hand, they went to explore. He bought him that clock while making fun of how he wasn't a morning person. He was right...
They had secretly eloped from Kenya to go have fun and be hopeless romantic in the south. Being that there it's easier to be gay than in their country, they thought it would be a great holiday destination. What he experienced in that one month was freedom beyond his expectations.
Jack made him feel like his soul was home. That he was proud of being born gay. That he mattered. And that renewed his hope for a rather dim future.
He had found the love of his life. Or so it seemed until the night earlier. Jack called and asked for a meet which he happily agreed to. A date on a Friday night with one's love makes sense, right? He made his way to their favourite joint where Jack was waiting with a beautiful woman clinging to him like a pest.
Jack seemed unbothered so he assumed she was a relative or friend. His assumptions were liquified after Jack announced that he wanted 'his best friend' to meet 'his future wife' and 'share' his thoughts.
Tell me old friend, ain't she just the finest piece of ass you've ever seen? he beamed.
The 'couple' laughed and kissed like it was nothing odd. He became numb and asked for a shot. Then another. And another. But nothing worked. Jack had played him for three secretive long years. His face showed no remorse so every time he laughed he ordered a shot.
The beautiful leech on his 'man's arm' asked him to slow down at one point. He remembered chuckling sarcastically and asking her if she even knew that her so called fiancee was gay. Jack's face expressions sold him out and her red skirt was the last thing he saw as she flew out of the quiet lounge.
Jack was boiling with anger when he stormed out after her. The waiter showed up at his table worried about their bill and he reassured him with his card and ordered a bottle. Gulp after gulp, he wallowed in whys, hows and whens till he blacked out.
I will gladly buy you another clock if you just ask, the half dressed Jack said standing on his bedroom door. And before you ask why I am here, the waiter you asked to call for an 'uber' called me instead as a security concern. I apologize but I couldn't leave you alone through last night.

Jack has a LOT of explaining to do. It was good that he stepped up and brought him home but still, the hurt he caused...
