When Breaks Morning

Perhaps t'was more by death than birth
that I came to this awakening.
The stark finality of knowing the phone on the wall will ring,
but it will no longer be you.
You, with all your warmth, life and love for me.
Yes, perhaps by death
I am able to see me more clear than ever reflected through the shifting mirror.

Perhaps by divorce,
rather than that marriage so many decades ago
I learned the first thing about love and it included
loving myself.
A ring or profession never a lover made,
but by the depths of hearts full sharing, and even the hard things at us staring, would we then begin to care.

Perhaps by being alone
I learned more, so much more about being together,
truly united, in heart and word
because silence has no accuser like one self.

Perhaps in the cauldron of pain and morosity I sampled the height of joy,
awareness like daybreak in a stormy night
where peaks of golden fingers
from the hand of God gently nudging me whisper
"wipe the sleep now from your eyes."
