Banned as a Reviewer - Beware the permissions you grant! - your friends can be held against you

Banned, Prohibited, Blocked

from ever posting another Amazon review from my existing account, and

Every Review I Ever Posted is GONE

for good, never to be reinstated.

Authors, Build Your Social Media Platform,

we have heard for years. But if you do, you'll be punished.

Novelist Tom Tinney warned us:

"I have been warning authors (And reviewers) for YEARS

...disconnect amazon and goodreads permissions from your Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts. Entirely.

No posting page read progress or anything.

Go into your social media settings and cut them off.

On twitter as well. You have to do it in your settings and NOT allow

kindle, amazon or goodreads to post your progress or grab info from your feed.

If the algorithm makes a connection

between YOUR friends list (That you give them access too) and the person/product being reviewed (Because they innocently gave that same access)...you're done.
This includes logging into goodreads using twitter or Facebook profile. They made it easy and that's just opening the chicken coop door for the fox.

I went from this:

To this:

But I'm still at NetGalley

GoodReads too:

Rave Review by Keangaroo is also still here!

How did I come to this low estate?

This is Amazon's response:

Log Rolling

is another concern, and rightly so given the history of some authors who traded 5-star reviews with each other back in the day, but I am not one of them.

Steemian and professional reviewer @roomerkind messaged me:

"The problem is logrolling or when people trade reviews. It is very common. However amazon does have an interest in protecting the integrity of reviews from logrollers."

I am not a log roller. I am a professional reviewer. Perihelion Science Fictionion, NetGalley - I have linked books for sale to Amazon, not to Kobo or B&N or google books. Just Amazon.

"Professional reviewers need to stay off Amazon. That's the point."

I've said it for years: if Kirkus charges authors and publishers a hefty fee to review a novel, I should be writing reviews for Kirkus and getting paid for my work.

Isn't it unethical to buy book reviews??

That was one reason I never did it.

Oh, the times, they are a changin'!

Steemians, beware the PERMISSIONS you grant!

Your friends can and will be held against you!

*That reminds me of an old song: "If I told you ya have a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?"

My crime was a "conflict of interest" -- promoting family and friends -- and if I merely follow you on Twitter, you are my friend, and anything good I say about you will be held against me.

Funny how those one-star bandits continue to have free rein, sabotaging the efforts of Indie Authors. There's a mob of these bandits who snag ebooks via "Free Today" deals, read a page or two, then slam the book.

But hey. At least they weren't promoting the work of a social media friend.

What the heck!? Not even a explanation of what rule or guideline you violated? This is absurd. 😮

I agree its absurd!

I'm sorry. 😣 i feel like this is all my fault because of the rejected review of Half Past the Moonfall.

Damn Amazon!

Cancelling my Select with them and finding other ways. Can't deal with such an inane, backwards company. Good grief!

@kaelci no, no, it is NOT your fault! For a long time I've reviewed books by people I follow on Twitter and whose posts I "Like" on Facebook. I'm surprised it too Amazon this long to take notice. I figured it was because I haven't published anything myself that I got away with it. But now they're cracking down on friends. Maybe they extended their surveillance to Steemit. Who knew?? Our daughter and her husband buy everything with Alexa (a woman I will never allow into my home, or an A.I. with a woman's voice - terrifying!!).
You are fine!! on't cancel Select unless you have other reasons!!

I was dubious from the start; Amazon and I don't have the best track record. I only even have an Amazon account because I needed one for Kickstarter. And then I ordered -one- physical item that they just handed to some random person walking infront of my house and got them to sign for it. I've never had a problem with deliveries except that one time.

But I figured that Amazon was the only way for self-publishing ebooks. I have since discovered that while they're the most well-known way, they're not the only way. :)

Amazon Select makes me exclusive to them, a thing that can be renewed or stopped every three months. I won't be renewing. So many people don't have a Kindle or use the Kindle app and prefer .epub format or .pdf format for their e-reading. This will enable me to offer these extra methods. I consider this whole thing a good little learning experience. :)

But I agree --I can't deal with Alexa or any of that stuff either. I like my basic very un-"smart" house. The only "smart" item in it is my phone and I'm certain that thing is listening to me too! 👀😒

Thank you for this! Good to know there are alternatives to Amazon exclusives. What a story about the mail carrier having some random person sign for a package. We've had Amazon shipments stolen before (our son, our daughter, in the cities), but nothing that crazy. I realize Amazon can't be responsible for every dimwit mail carrier, too... still. No Alexa in my house and no more Amazon Vine packages at my door. I've threatened to cut back on book reviewing and write/publish my stuff, but i didn't follow through. Now I have to !

Sorry to hear that, Carol :(

Communicating with the customer support services of such companies, which get progressively automated, is beyond frustrating.

I hope you have copies of your old reviews saved somewhere, if not, that's probably the worst :(

I did not save copies. Only what's also at goodreads, and I often forgot to double post.
Thanks @geekorner. Tech support. If you get a real human, the foreign accent makes him or her almost impossible for me to understand.

Here is an example of the MANY many instances of me promoting Amazon as the place to buy books:

That is terrible!! And one of the reasons that I have everything not connected with each other. At least I think so and will double check now.

I hate the power those companies have and that is why it is important to have your own thing...

So sad to hear that. And your reviews are amazing!! Now, better get paid for them if the free ones are being eliminated. Amazon is getting way too powerful - so is Facebook. but we are giving them all the power!

Anyway. A little bandaid.

Congratulations on your 100% upvote :)

Thanks Marianne (I see you added your name to make sure I knew it wasn't @byn - LOL!). You are so wise to keep all these things separate, disconnected, in spite of the temptation (so easy, so user friendly!) to link all our accounts: Twitter, Amazon, Goodreads, Facebook, and more recently, Steemit + Instagram, even... bandaid gratefully accepted! And I hope I can return the favor but I hope even more that there will never be a NEED to offer you bandaids. :)

Carol, I'm so sorry about this. It the end of an era, and Amazon's loss.

Thanks!
On the bright side, it's the kick I needed to make good on my vow to cut back on reviewing and write/publish my own stuff.

Goodreads as well?!

No, no, for some reason Goodreads (affiliated with Amazon) allows friends to review each other's books (as far as I know).

I did review two friends books so I hope they won't block me.

$50 OFF a Kirkus review - I would be thrilled to get $50 TOTAL for a book review, while Kirkus charges hundreds. How many indie authors can afford that?

Awwn

So Sorry about that. But, glad you are ready to publish you own thing, you do have a way of writing that keeps people to read more.
