Natural Mouthwashes for Fresher Breath and Healthy Teeth

We have all been there. Even the most diligent tooth brusher have those moments when their breath is unpleasant. And normally it happens at an inopportune moment like a first date, social gathering or a job interview. However, constantly reaching out to your mouthwash to combat bad breath can come with unintended negative outcomes such as a dry mouth, tooth staining, an altered sense of taste, ulcers and inflamed gums. Also, not to forget the fact that carrying around a bottle of mouthwash often is not practical. The main key in fighting bad breath is proper and regular brushing this includes regular scrubbing of the tongue which is a prime spot of bacteria.
With that said, here are several natural mouthwashes for fresher breath and healthy teeth.

  • Fennel Seeds
Fennel seeds contain antiseptic properties which help in getting rid of harmful bacteria which lead to bad breath. Chewing a teaspoon of fennel seed will help to freshen up your breath and stimulate saliva production. The antimicrobial effect present in saliva helps to combat bad breath.

  • Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is a natural antibacterial and antifungal plant extract. Research studies have proven that it is as effective as chlorhexidine mouthwash at eliminating plaque. Also, it stimulates the production of collagen which improves the mouth’s ability to heal. To make your aloe vera mouthwash, boil some water and add some aloe vera gel once the water has cooled. You may also add some peppermint oil to improve its taste.

  • Cinnamon
Cinnamon is rich in essential antioxidants, polyphenols, and flavonoids which make it a power-packed spice for good health. These essential components contain antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties which help to get rid of bad breath.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar
If you want to mask off bad breath that has been caused by garlic and onions. You can easily do this using some apple cider vinegar. Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to half a glass water and swish the solution lightly around your mouth. The solution will neutralise the bad odour and freshen up your breath immediately.

  • Baking Soda
Baking soda is a natural way of freshening up your breath by neutralising built-up acids that stuck in your mouth. There are two options for using baking soda to combat bad breath. The first one is to dissolve a teaspoon of baking soda in water and gargle the solution in your mouth as you would with mouthwash. The other option involves dampening your toothbrush and then dip it into baking soda before brushing your teeth.

  • Vegetable and Fruits
Fruits such as berries, watermelons, and oranges are not only good for your body health, but they are also rich in Vitamin C. Therefore, bacteria practically die immediately when you chew them. Crunchy and fiber-rich vegetables also help in eliminating bad breath by stimulating saliva production and helping to scrape off plaque build-up on your teeth.

Bottom Line
Whereas there is absolutely nothing wrong with using these natural mouthwashes to freshen up your breath, it’s imperative to keep in mind that your body may also be trying to send a message. Bad breath is worthy of a dental visit since it may be a sign of gum disease or tooth decay.
