Gemstone Museum Idar-Oberstein, Germany- Deutsches Edelsteinmuseum

in fridaysrock •  6 years ago

The Gemstone Museum in Idar-Oberstein, Germany has one of the finest collections of rocks and minerals in Europe, and it is the reason that we chose to visit. It had begun to snow when we arrived, adding to the beauty of this lovely old town.

As you look upwards at the craggy mountains, you can't help but to stop and admire the stunning Felsenkirche chapel.

image

The only way to the Felsenkirche is 230 steep ancient steps up from the market place of Idar-Oberstein. Because of slippery walking conditions we decided it would be foolish to make the climb.

According to legend, this unique chapel, known as the Felsenkirche (“Chapel-in-the-Rocks” and “Crag Church”), was built between 1482 and 1484
to atone for the murder of a prince by his jealous brother.
Wyrich and Emich, the two brothers who lived in the castle atop of the cliff, were both in love with a beautiful woman named Bertha. When learning that Emich had wed Bertha while he was away,
he was so angry that Wyrich shoved his younger brother to his death from the tower above (now ruins), Rddled with guilt about what he had done, as penance he built a church with his own hands where his brothers body landed.

Water seepage and falling rocks have repeatedly damaged the church in the course of its history, and because no cars or trucks have access the extensive renovations have been costly.

After checking into our room at Gasthaus Schuck we went off to explore the museum and were not at all disappointed.

In 24 rooms and across four floors, the exhibits have been collected over almost 100 years.

There is former mine that is the only one of its kind in Europe that is open to the public. It has 400m of tunnels that offer the opportunity to understand the formation of semi-precious stones still trapped in the volcanic rock. There is also a section where visitors can do some digging for precious stones themselves. The guided tour is in German but is only available from mid Mar-mid Nov and we were there in January,

If you are ever in the area the area Idar-Oberstein is well worth a visit. The works of Mother nature are quite marvelous!

Thanks, my friend!

Those are some incredible shots of the cliff and quite a sad story, thanks for sharing.

Thank you. After all this time there is no proof that the story is anything more than a legend, but it is a sad legend.

This seems so wonderful, the first photos are so cool, i am not a big fan pof gemstones but i like visiting museums. ^^

It is a beautiful area and an amazing museum!

Wow. You just made me totally homesick - in a good way!! this town reminds me a lot of my hometown, the way the buildings are and the Christmas light decoration across the street.

In my NaNoWriMo writing I kept coming back to childhood memories and dumped my original plan and am going for it. This morning, I started to write about Christmas memories and this post is so perfect!!!! Thank you!

Oh! I can't wait to read what you write! Germany is my favorite place to be at Christmas time!

I have to agree with you on that one. It is so mystical and all -well, at least it used to be that way...

Beautiful village and love those big geodes

Thanks... It was a wonderful place to get to see! Especially for a rock lover!

How beautiful pictures. And the rocks look so beautiful... And the landscape with the snow are so gorgeous😍 Thanks so much dear for sharing the amazing pictures of your travels

Thanks so much! It really was a beautiful place and seeing their collection was a great experience!

I'm sure that seeing is that collection of rocks was something really great. You also have very beautiful photos.

Thanks! I do enjoy touring museums. There is so much to learn!

Beautiful snow photos! I've never gotten to Germany, but it looks pretty. Maybe someday... The gemstone museum looks fascinating, too. It would be interesting to explore that one for sure.

That entire area was fascinating! So much history. We were just passing through on a road trip from Paris to Amsterdam, but it would sure be great to spend time there in the spring or fall! I really like Germany.

Thank you for an amazing post! When I first looked at your photo of the church, I thought that it looked like it was built into the side of the mountain. Very interesting story to go with it. Beautiful photos of both the town and the rocks in the museum. It looks like a really fun trip!!
