Making Soda From Rainwater! How Frugal Can You Get?

in frugal •  7 years ago  (edited)

I've done a great deal recently trying to cut down my expenses. LED bulbs, water saving showerhead, that kind of thing. With SBD plummeting towards zero, I need every advantage I can get if I'm gonna be able to keep paying rent and utilities.

With that in mind, about a month ago I looked at how much I spend in a month just on soda. It's my only vice, and I can't quit however hard I try. But I can make it healthier and cheaper. Step one was to buy a Sodastream used for $10.

Step two, as seen above, was to never ever use the official sodastream CO2 bottles. They cost $35 upfront and then $20 for refills IIRC. I was able to buy a food grade CO2 bottle with the correct nozzle type to be refilled at any sporting goods store for $24, and an adapter I bought online for $10.

Alright, getting a little spendy. But when you consider that a CO2 refill from Dick's Sporting Goods is $3.50 you can see how this method saves money aggressively over time compared to continual $20 refills of the official Sodastream CO2 bottles.

It's important to find out from wherever you plan to get CO2 what the impurities profile of their CO2 is. Industrial grade can be as low as 99.0% pure. Food grade is 99.90% pure. Medical grade is 99.99% pure.

Dick's supplies CO2 that's 99.8% pure, which imo is close enough to food grade that the 0.1% difference doesn't matter. The impurities are stuff like hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen. In industrial grade CO2 there can be benzene and traces of oil vapor in there, so definitely stay away from that.

For flavoring I'm using a variety of cheapo powdered drink mixes. Kool Aid, Wyler's, and a brand of sugar free apple cider I've discovered that's quite tasty. I can't find any traditional soda flavors like cola, dr. pepper or creme soda in powdered form, but will keep looking.

Already I've drastically reduced the cost of carbonated, flavored sugar water. But what if the water can be free as well? We've had a rainy weekend in Portland, so given that rainwater catchment is perfectly legal here (despite what you may have heard from disreputable sources a few years back) I put a water tank out with a large funnel:

Low tech but it's a start. I collected plenty enough water for doing the dishes, and for making soda. It sort of boggles my mind that it's actually illegal in some places to catch free water that falls from the sky. If you can use a solar panel to catch sunlight and turn it into electricity, why should it be illegal to catch rainwater?

Anyway that's my fizzy sugar water craving taken care of as cheaply as possible, in perpetuity. Next thing I'll be taking a serious look at is investing in a large, proper rainwater catchment system hooked up to the gutter, with filters and whatnot.

I don't know if I can connect it to the house water supply as a renter, but I could certainly use it for watering the yard. More on that as it develops.

@alexbeyman,
Raining water is not illegal in my country! But I don't know bacterial issues that could happen while opening it for long time! Otherwise this is better and I wish to try this out!

Cheers~

Alex - Sky water (Rainy water) is using to make drinking water in my country... Water is the precious to most of areas... Therefore, this is a good way to use that water to make something precious...

Dude, I would really recommend investing in a really solid water filter if you're going to do that. There are particulates in the air that get picked up by rainwater that are really bad for you.

Huge respect for your Bruh @alexbeyman. There aren't much people doing what you are doing. Living a frugal and an energy-effiecient lifestyle isn't something we rarely see these days .Who would have even thought one can make soda from mare rain water? This is something new to me even a Biology undergrad.

What branch of biology are you studying?

Biological Sciences is the name of the program. So I basically study all the branches; some into details and some very shallowly.

That's an intricate well laid down plan to cut cost, leading to an investment too. Good work done i think i will take a line from your script and make some changes for myself too

You are an enterprising rationalizer. Congratulations.

If you're right the soda is a very addictive drink I say it because I like it too but because of the high cost of this product here in my country very few people can buy such a drink, but if you have the chance to try it yourself I hope And if you succeed, you would save good money.

Dude how scientific can you get.

@ alexbeyman I am also very addicted to this type of drink but, little by little I have left it because I had a daily drink, now I take 1 or 2 a week, if I take the whole week I will end up in salary of my work in just refreshment The soda has a value of one day's salary here in my country. I hope you can make or find a correct way to collect water and that you have no problems with the state and less with the tenant.
Greeting and luck.

They are insidious with their advertising too. They want to get you hooked.

less sbd more experiments:great job

I hope you are boiling that rainwater or filtering it or something before you use it? Right? RIGHT?! AHHHH

...No. Am I going to die? I don't feel dead currently.

Actually, it's probably safe. key word 'probably," if you don't live near power plants or other kind of things that contaminate the environment.

I Am so with you on trying to save money but it’s quite difficult . Simple groceries for a week in NYC can cost 50-60$ and then everything on top of that. It’s tough but saving bots and progress fed really helps. I send a lot on sofa as well , maybe this is a great investment

Wait, it’s illegal to catch rainwater in certain places? Why?!

Because they need everybody to pay their fair share for the ongoing upkeep of water delivery infrastructure. If you have large numbers of people benefiting from the infrastructure but using very little water from the water company, the business model breaks down.

I suppose that makes sense, but on the other hand, if people are catching rainwater (and I imagine it would be a pretty small amount of people who would be catching all of the water they use), it would put less strain on the water infrastructure. And like, how the hell do you police that anyway!? I mean it's one thing if huge companies or apartment complexes are doing it, but it seems so harmless if individual households are doing it. And it's not like Portland has any shortage of water.

You police it by sending inspectors to look for rainwater catchment systems which are unavoidably large and conspicuous as you've got to put the barrel/tank someplace near the gutter pipe. I agree though, it's asinine. But to be clear, it's not illegal in Oregon.

What hope is there for us? I believe though that soon the price will be up again

I hope you're right.

Me too

Looks like I should start collecting rainwater.

Hey it looks pretty cool, especially to experiment with certain flavors.
Chocolate, natural juices, coffee, tea or some infusion is a pity that I can not replicate it in my country.

The landlord pays water so I won't be doing that until I am living under a bridge by the freeway which looks to be 3-4 weeks time.

Is the water really that expensive in Portland? Like does it actually save some money when you don't have to use few gallons of tap water? Or actually, can you even drink tap water there? If that's not the case I understand why you want to save money

Yes, it is. No, it probably doesn't, but it will if I invest in a larger catchment system. Yes, I can.

I switched all the bulbs in my house over to led a few years ago, it was a good decision.

That’s awesome! I really admire you for all of that.. I am basically jobless since the beginning of May becaue somw stuff happening at work and I really need to step up my spending game like you do at least a little.. good thing I only drink water anyways.. trying to get the big bargains in the super markets as of late as well.

Sorry to hear that. I hope Steemit will help alleviate things. Right now I depend totally on Steemit earnings, so watching SBD tank has been very stressful.

It’s going to come back around. It always does! Just wish you manage with what it is now until then! This market is quite crazy and very often not reliable when we most need it to boom. Unfortunately no one can survive on patience.

Thanks for you

This reminds me of living with my parents. They live on an island where diesel, and petrol is shipped in to generate electricity and keep the cars running, so electricity and fuel is expensive so everyone has LEDs and the most fuel efficient cars they can afford.
Any waste created has to be shipped off the island so things like soda streams and biodegradable anything is very popular over there.

Oh, interesting. Have they looked into solar panels?

Yeah most people on the island have solar hot water systems with gas heated back up system.

Try something else bro.

You got any ideas?

Yes soft drink 😀😀😀

Lol

Creating a cost-effective increase in cost, your planning situation is so much better, and you work in a process way your job is very much appreciated.

Good article.
Congrats.

This is great stuff from you sir and its a great learning curve for all of us.

fantastic way to share with us.thank you.

Great Eqipment sir really these needs to take over by governments.

It's a plan for us to reduce the price

Trying to save money is not easy job but the way you are doing this job is quite amazing and innovative...
Untill the sbd rises up in the market again but much higher than previous we have to do such experiments..
Thanks for sharing with us this idea..

The future is here . The is how a mass change starts

Never knew a low SBD value could bring a techie out of a person.. Wait, wait.... U already a techie, right.. Nice job
