We find ourselves in a tropical jungle. There are fruits, vegetation, grains/beans, and animals.
Fruits are wrapped in a skin, with high moisture content, bloom in bright colours that attract our eye, tantalise our taste-buds, send out a wonderful aroma, grow above ground visible to the eye, pleasurable and easy to eat soft fleshy interior, easily picked whilst the plant continues to grow, and may be eaten raw.
Vegetation is usually shades of green, bitter, send out little aroma, do little to attract our eye in a field of green, often difficult to 'harvest', can be starchy and difficult to chew, often require preparation through soaking or fire, and require destroying the plant to eat. Often prepared with healing herbs or spices to give them a more desirable 'flavour'.
Grains/beans are hard dry seeds, usually yellow, white or brown, send out little aroma, do little to attract our eye, difficult to harvest, require destroying the plant to eat, and require preparation through soaking and/or fire or they have immediate adverse effects. Usually prepared with healing herbs or spices to give them any flavour.
Animals are breathing sentient beings, do nothing to attract our taste-buds, send out no aroma to instigate appetite, difficult to 'harvest' (animals run away and actively fight for their lives) must be murdered, skinned (usually with utensils and tools), bled, gutted, soaked, marinaded in herbs and spices to make eating tolerable, then prepared in fire (not following these steps can result in death through poisoning), high probability of bacteria and parasites.
