This is one of my favorite challenge here on Steemit. The other is #marketfriday :)
But today is #fruitsandveggiesmonday hosted by our dear friend @lenasveganliving, so I'm showing you my fresh and organic currants from the garden.
Nowadays we only have two types: white and red. Back in the day, when my grandparents were running the place, we had many black ones too but one year there was a tough winter and all the black ones froze.
Currants are not like any other fruits, they are kind of unique and they are expensive too. They are also called ribes and there are 150 known types. Don't ask me what type is this on the photo because I have no idea. It's white :D
Blackcurrant roots were used by Indians to treat kidney diseases and also for menstrual and menopausal problems. The fruit was used as a fertility enhancer to assist women in becoming pregnant. It turns out that currant roots are rich in gamma-linolenic acid, which is effective treatment for pre-menstrual syndrome.
I'm not going to treat any of these diseases with currant, but I use them to make a wonderful currant jam which is an acidulated jam. I love it.
This way I can have my own jam for winter times and can use it for pancakes (or crepe) and at least I know what I'm eating.
This is a mascarpone crepe with currant jam.
My grandparents have some currant shrubs, I love them!
Great post, you shared some fascinating informations! :)

I used to eat them a lot as a child, from my grandmother's garden. I buy them here in Canada when they are in season which is the late summer.
Your photos are absolutely beautiful Erika including the insightful information. Well done my Dear, another fabulous entry 🍒 🍌🍑🌿🍍🍓🍇

Are currants expensive in Canada? Here they are very expensive, unfortunately.

I love currants and we had white, red and black when I was a kid. They don't grow here - too warm. which I am not complaining about :)

I haven't had currants to make jam with for years. I would plant some bushes here, but suspect the wildlife would get to them before me! Great pictures. I have never had white ones!
