“Sota Fujii: Breaking Records and Making History in the World of Shogi”

in fujisota •  last year

Sota Fujii, a six-crown shogi player, is on the verge of making history. On Sunday, if he wins the fourth game of the Eioh Championship (Miyako City, Iwate) against Ryuya Sugai, an eighth-dan player, he will achieve his third consecutive victory. And if he defeats Meijin Akira Watanabe in the Meijin Championship (Takayama Village, Nagano) starting on May 31st at “Fujii Mansion,” he will become the youngest player ever to achieve seven crowns.

Will he become the youngest seven-crown player? On May 6th, Sota Fujii won two out of three games in the Eioh Championship five-game match, putting him one step closer to defending his title. If he defeats challenger Ryuya Sugai (31) in the fourth game of the Eioh Championship held in Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture on May 28th, Fujii will achieve his third consecutive victory.

Furthermore, on May 31st in Takayama Village, Nagano Prefecture, the fifth game of the seven-game Meijin Championship will take place. So far, Fujii has won three out of four games against Meijin Akira Watanabe (39), putting him just one win away from claiming the title. If he wins, he will become the youngest player ever to win the Meijin title and achieve seven crowns.

Sota Fujii said: “The fifth game of the Meijin Championship is coming up soon, so I’m not really thinking about my score. I just want to be in good shape for it.”

Sota Fujii has rewritten many records in shogi history. We look forward to his big match starting on May 28th.
