Buy with what? They already lost 97% of their money on Steem. Isn't the promise of Steem that you can contribute and earn? (Promise maybe, definitely not reality.)

At this point, I respect anyone who participates (except for spam and the like). But I think investing hard-earned money into it is malinvestment for most people.

Do you really think any of the content posted on this site is worth any $? It’s 99.9% trash nobody would pay for.

Not trying to be snarky, but you answered your question. Yes, some of the content posted here is worth money -- even if it's 0.1%. I'm surprised the authors post it here when it would be much easier to monetize a site they control -- without donating their efforts to a blockchain.

Then again, how many sites do you follow where you would pay for content? Maybe 0.1%?

So maybe Steem is average. Not great. Just average.

Content is not necessarily what is supposed to be valued here: anyone can read the content posted on this blockchain for free - one doesn't even need an account for that. Content is a materialization of engagement and a vehicle for community building. The value is in the (size of community + strength of relationships + intensity of interactions). The steem blockchain is about a lot more than content. Content is only the first application which has been implemented on it. Paying for open-source software (Utopian) is another. Steemmonsters.com is a third (not about content). Payments and "money" transfers (for instance through steemwallet) yet another ... Of course it would be much better if there had been high quality content too. But driving away bad content is doing nothing to bring high quality content.

that is what I said. buy with what and why should we be penalized if we do not buy. where is that rule written when you sign up for Steemit.

Totally agree. "Pay to play" only works when you get something in return. Paying for Steem with USD is a good way to lose for most people -- for some, it might be an interesting speculative mood. Most people will keep on doing "Free" (which is really giving away personal data) instead of gamble their money.
