- Cleaning snow in the car
This photo was taken in 1917 in New York. Cars still did not have windows, so the snow was clean from the outside but also from the inside.
- Cleaning the ice
The boys of the photo taken between 1909 and 1932 cleaned the snow from ice before slipping on it. For cleaning large areas, people used tractors that drag blades for snow. After testing several prototypes, Frank J. Zamboni patented a snow-clearing machine in 1953.
- There was no state of emergency for the snow days
In our country, it may rarely happen, but in some countries it regularly reports a state of emergency for the snow days. That means giving up the school because of the fallen snow. But these students from Alaska photographed in 1910 did not have this luxury.
- Bed for cold weather
An electric bed without a blanket is shown on this photograph from 1927. The bed was created by Milton Fairchild from Washington, and the purpose of the device is to heat the person without blankets. The product is not very famous because people just do not want to sleep in boxes.
- Scary school transport
Forget the cars by heating the seats. In 1936, when this photo was taken, the students traveled to a cabin mounted in a sledge-mounted cabin. The trip lasted for up to 2 hours in one direction, and they only arrived if the cabin was not lit. They were heated with a wood stove.
- Inappropriate winter equipment
Today, when it's cold, we dress as thickly as possible clothing, in several layers. The girl in the photo of 1909 is dressed as if on a spring walk. She was the winner of the Winter Carnival in New York.
- No refrigerators
In the past, if you wanted to eat various products in the winter, you would often buy them in a jar. This was the cheapest way to save, but there was often the risk of ruining overcrowded shelves. The refrigerators were not used so much until the end of World War II. In 1939, when this photo was made, the ordinary refrigerator cost about 4,000 euros today.
- Operation of the raw cold
These days we get the latest information from our computers and smartphones. We should not even leave our bed. But there used to be young men who were distributing newspapers every day, even when it was really cold. On this photograph of 1909, the youngest boy was 8 years old and 3 years of working experience.

I love the old pictures of our ancestors. They were a rugged bunch of individuals weren't they. I went ahead and resteemed this article. Stay warm and cozy
