The southern white rhinoceros is the most abundant species of rhino in the world, with an estimated 20,000 individuals in the wild!
They weren't always so abundant though. Back in the early 1900s there were only 20 southern white rhinos left. Over time and with intense conservation efforts that number went up to 1,000 in the 1980s, 11,000 in 2001, and now the subspecies has rebounded to the best point in more than a century.
The baby rhino is a girl named Wiesje! She was born in August 2017.
