Permaculture Chicken Project Update: July 22, 2019

in fundition-xmv5lpvat •  5 years ago

This is an update to my Regenerative Permaculture Chicken Fundraiser.

Meet Blondie and Blue, our new Easter egger pullets. The lady I bought em from had a lot of chickens. She said "if they're not laying now, they'll be laying within a month." That's why I bought em. Nate needs some eggs.

Blue, the stunning one with the gray tail and beard was bought with a generous donation from @riverflows. True Blue. Here she is in hand:

These birds are super smart and cunning. And fast! They're probably never going to like me a lot, but they'll be awesome birds to have in our flock for those smarts. It'll be fun seeing where I get to chase them.

Blondie was funded by some side work I did. Look at her lace pattern! Isn't she beautiful?

Instead of talking more about how badass chickens are, I wanna gush a little about this community.

Where I would have four chickens right now, I have eight, solely because of the support of this community. When I had seven laying hens before, it was 100% of what my family needed, plus enough to share a dozen every few months. The homesteading, natural medicine, and permaculture community here on steem is just awesome. I'm completely humbled by the help I've received in this venture the last couple of weeks. A warm thank you to @makinstuff and @riverflows for your help and support. I'm deeply blessed to have y'all in my life.

I have no doubt there'll be support for more chooks. When that happens, I'll buy more. Until then, I will love and enjoy these eight birds a lot, and I'll be reminded of this community every time I sit with them. The steem ecosystem is making a difference all over the world.

I'm going to start weaving a local network very soon. I'll use the yield from the garden to do so. Everyone loves homegrown food. That local community is why I want to shoot for fifteen laying hens. Then I'll have eggs to share. The whole goal of all of this is to build my neighborhood food economy to bring us together a bit. Of course, that's a small building block for another level of the holistic ideal, but it's progress. I feel bad it's taken me this long to be comfortable with this route. If I'd understood a year ago what I understand now, I might have done it differently. But here I am.

I'm getting my shit together, I promise.

All action for the good of all.

Nate.

The lacing is lovely! Fifteen hens should give you plenty of eggs for the first year.

That's why the rooster. For year two and up :) I see stock chickens everywhere lol

I was hearing about the benefits of these breeds that aren't production type bird like my old GSLs. They'll lay a bit less, like 250 instead of 300 eggs a year, but they'll lay for a little longer to make up for it. I'm gonna see if I'm okay with that, especially considering how much prettier these birds are. Aesthetic may matter a bit too much to me lol

I liked the idea of a prettier flock, and for a few years tried for it. But on a single disability income, these birds had to earn their way. So we went for production (meat and eggs) over pretty. Sigh...

You da man brother, the new chickens are beauts!
