Today we will be talking about the psychology. Scared yet? Don't be. It will be a fun little ride into your mind and we are sure you will appreciate it. We are often chasing the answers about the Universe and neglecting to contemplate and evaluate our behavior. Today will be the day you learn something about yourself.

"Learn to know yourself... to search realistically and regularly the processes of your own mind and feelings."
Nelson Mandela

According to an American psychologist Abraham Maslow, we all have 5 basic needs that we need to meet. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology that tells us which need takes precedence over others and how exactly are they met.

A pyramid hierarchy...

In this pyramid, those needs at the bottom need to be met first. We first have to be satisfied with our need for food, water, air, sleep (physiological needs) before we can go on to fulfill the needs for security, employment, health (safety needs) and so on. We are climbing the pyramid and once one level is fulfilled the next level up is what motivates us. It all starts with a need for physical survival and ends with meeting the fullest potential as a human being.

PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS - biological requirements for human survival
SAFETY NEEDS -protection, stability, freedom from fear
SOCIAL BELONGING - being part of a group with family, friends
ESTEEM - achievement and reputation
SELF-ACTUALIZATION - personal potential and self-fulfillment

Where is CONTRIBUTION in all of this, you wonder? In two places actually. It is partly in our need for esteem where we desire respect from others and want to feel dignified and like we have achieved something. It is also in the mysterious six need. In his later years, Abraham Maslow proposed an additional need and called it transcendence. We will achieve our fullest realization in giving to something beyond ourselves. The most inclusive and holistic levels of human consciousness are behaviors and relations to human beings in general, other species, nature, and to the cosmos itself. An altruistic approach to life.

The order of needs is not rigid

Even though some of our needs mostly take precedence over others, they are still flexible. They are based on individual differences and external circumstances. Our behavior is often simultaneously determined by more than one basic need and we can be in positions where even the highest needs in that pyramid are pushing us before those that are below them.

Our need to contribute to society transforms us from self-centered beings into those that are open and caring of the world we live in. We need to feel useful and like we are serving others so we donate, help and contribute in order to achieve a feeling like we have left our mark on the world.

Every human has a built-in need
to help another human.

We are compassionate and emphatic. We care for others and have always been bothered with injustice. No matter who you ask, he or she will answer you that people all over the world should be happy, healthy and have all their needs met. No one should be hungry, sick or poor. We all share that opinion but some of us are actually doing something about it. If we all have a need for contribution, why are some contributing and some are not?

Some are better at silencing their need to contribute than others.

We do not want you to silence your need for contribution. It is one of those needs that will not only make you feel better but it will help others. By enriching yourself with it, the world will be enriched. When have you last time made yourself proud, satisfied and useful by helping others? Do you remember how good that feeling was? Imagine feeling like that every day. You can with Fundition.

But how to achieve these needs ?? There are more and more complexities and they are increasing. Some plays with the mind and some physically but coming back to the point, very well presented and for sure a happy moment and a very good post to see at sunday...

Hello Mathayus!
I think the problem may lay in the fact that we are always running after the fulfillment of those needs and so it looks like we can never achieve all of them. Also as you say there are more and more complexities and are increasing...but are we the one who should choose to stop the increase and the complexity?
Maybe we should stop at some point and look at what we got right at this very moment.
If you are interested in this subject you can read about the mindfulness or Eckhart Tolle- The power of now, very interesting book! =)

Humans are definitely compassionate and this is key to their relationships with fellow humans who definitely needs their help.

Hello @josedicus! Yes Humans are compassionate...Usually we are compassionate towards those that we cherished such as friends and family, but with Fundition we hope to enlarge the scope of compassion and go beyond the friends and family circle and to reach others that we don't know, and more generally all living beings. I guess that's why Founders are even more thankful to the Backers they don't know...=)

Great post! As a matter of fact, I've been writing about it. I am a psychiatrist, and the psychodynamic area is very important to understand human subjectivity. Link to Social Reality - The Human Reality and The Maternal Language - The Beginning of Subjective Mental Construction are some recent exemples. Nowadays, we become very isolated as a society of social relations, tending to be more individualistic. However, no knowledge or instrument that does not serve the social in the broad sense of the word, only has value to the ego, and serve the ego the hate, we are social beings by nature, when we do not have the human affection and social relationship, only what we have of more irrational remains.. And we are a fascinating species, where hate comes from, it is the same place where love comes from. For more love in the world! amazing project the @fundition, very important theme these days! Congratulations! We are coming and we hope to contribute and participate with @brazilians community.

Hello Mattheusggr! Psychodynamic is definitely a key to understand the human subjectivity and behavior. As you said we tend to be more isolated but it could probably be because of how people tend to compare to others now and kind of decrease their self esteem. Also I observed the birth of the digital social phobia that is isolating people now. The power of the screen is scary and fascinating at the same time, but fortunately for us there are ways to build a better future, to incentivize collaborations, and work on the self-esteem.
If you are interested in social behaviors/interactions you should definitely check on Erving Goffman work...completely interesting!

Great complement. I also curious about fear, and how it has been fed by public representatives in the name of power. In Brazil we are in a difficult situation, today we elect, and regardless of the result we live the extremes of radicalism. I also believe that we must build a better future, a reason to be here and trying to build a Brazilian community that supports the platform and that I believe that technology can greatly benefit our social inequality and political and social chaos. I have heard of but have not read the works of Erving Goffman, can you recommend some of his books to start with? I began to understand this technological moment from Manuel Castells with Network society. I study with references such as psychoanalysis, and fundamental and geral psychopathology. With much affinity with the French school that passes through Freud - Lacan., and now with exponents like C. Melman, M. Czermak and others. A pleasure to read and discuss topics like this one, and it gives me a lot of hope. Thanks
@addicttolife.

For Erving Goffman the very start should be The presentation of Self in Everyday Life =)
Yes in France usually at the psychology faculty we study Freud for like 3 years basically, and Lacan it should be like a semester and Jung maybe one small course. I've always regretted not learning more about Lacan and Jung. I usually work with psychoanalysis theories too, but nowadays I feel like Behavioral Therapies could be great too, so I'm starting to dig deeper into this subject hehe!
Ah right...Freud - Civilization and its discontents is also an awesome book.

Freud is incredible, this text is as current as it was when it was performed, I like to call him Sherlock Holmes from the unconscious. :)
Jung I read main texts, Lacan is difficult, but a huge breakthrough that only time will show. I still have a long walk to understand him better. Behavioral Therapies advanced a lot, I had some classes this year, here in Brazil has been much discussed and used and I refer many patients with excellent results. Thanks for the recommendation!

Ironically, @fundition posted this article about the Maslow Hierachy of Needs @beinconstrained. Notice how they mention that the Hierachy is flexible, and that more than one need can be motivating us to take action.

Giving increases my self-esteem and @fundition enables people to give through upvotes on the Steem blockchain!

Hello @chrisrice ! I think the Hierarchy isn't a strict one at all. I've seen people who have no need for security such as employment and house but need pride and esteem much more (thinking about my patients actually).
Giving through Fundition could help them fulfill the self-esteem, but not only that, it could also help to transcend ourselves and to achieve another need.
But I'd like to add that Giving doesn't necessarily mean money, it could be a smile, some kind words and knowledge, those are also forms of giving :)
Have a nice day.

I believe that if you give you will get in one way or the other.

Hello @jacksonoskele ! Definitely...because doing good will call for the good to come.
