Rent Excuse # 38, Get the Delay You Need. Real Excuses Used on Me (the Landlord) that got the Renter Delays and Sometimes Cost Me Big Bucks.

Your landlord is going to hate me for this.

Excuse 38:

“Public Service disconnected the electricity and gas, and we had to get it turned back on.”

Certainly the landlord should understand this excuse. After all, you can't properly maintain the landlord's property (especially during the cold winter months) without electricity and gas. On second thought, if it is so important, then why did you let it get shut off in the first place?

If this occurs during the winter, be prepared to have the landlord ask to inspect the place to make sure nothing froze up and broke or was damaged. The landlord will also want to know when you expect to pay up before you get slapped with a three-day notice.

If you have problems paying your heating bills during the winter, where you get a few really high heating bills some months, you should check with your utility company to see if they have a constant payment plan that levels out the payments over the year.
