Now days everyone has a phone, my neighbors I swear have a phone for their dogs. But what is the right age to get your child a phone? You go everywhere, and you see young kids playing on their parents phone, heck I get a call a week from my friends baby. So is 14 days old too soon for a phone?
The phone companies think so, their plans are pretty much the same for 2 lines as they are for 4 lines. Don't get me started, on phones, and services. In a shrinking margin economy these guys seem to be able to still make fatter margins, and give crappy services. A phone now days can be up to two weeks of average pay, they use to give them away. I am going to hold out and getting my kid a phone when they start driving, call me a radical.
I am thinking not till like 13, but that is just off the top of my head.

Agreed totally.!! And for babies it is really hazardous for their eyes. But nowadays parents always show them games, videos on phone just to stop them from crying. But unknowingly they are making a huge mistake!!

Ya true, the eyes thing. Usually it takes about 10 years for the effects of a new product or drug to really become apparent. Screens are coming up on that age, wonder what cancer or disease they will give us.

Interesting post @bigram13, thank you for sharing your thoughts on the topic. Although I think the"right" age to become responsible for a cell phone certainly depends on the individual and circumstances, I also think there is such a thing as too young. In addition, I am not a fan of parents handing their kids their phones as a form of entertainment either. I think this tactic often translates to a missed opportunity to connect in a meaningful way.

Ya, I just see every other day some kid killed themselves do to online bullying, and one of those things used are phones. They control a kids life, and are the most important thing.

hmmm...interesting point, though honestly I think the whole bullying thing has a lot to do with the amount of time and attention these individuals are given during which they feel valued. As with all matters, there are many variables, and I certainly do agree that children being glued to a small screen in search of acceptance can often be more debilitating than empowering.

I absolutely agree with you.
It's not a radical at all.
We have to give what they need not what they want ❤️

I got my first Nokia phone when i was around 14 years old. Maybe i will buy phones for my kids when they are in high school. But we may not need a phone in the future

As a teacher, I see kids with phones way too early in my opinion. Kids in grade 3 and 4 with iPhones. Sorry but this is crazy. These kids get enough screen time already. For my own kids we have decided on 13 for a phone. The age when they start spending a little more time at home alone and out with friends. It’s really only so we can keep tabs on where they are and what’s going on.

Agree completely with your take here. I did some seasonal work in a local mall this past holiday season and I swear I have never seen so many little children playing on phones before! I don't see the point of a child having a phone until they are a teenager at the very least, but i think I fall under the old-fashioned category with you - when they start driving seems like a perfect age to me!

Ha ha, that's not a bad idea. Or you could get them an old flip phone or brick phone. Then you could contact them if you needed to, but they'd be too embarrassed to pull it out in front of their friends. Save on minutes. You could just do a prepaid plan. Saving money already!

That's a unique conclusion of friends, little children today are so synonymous with the phone, and focus on communication. Lol

If it were only that easy 😔. There are too many kids with phones today and when you have a kid who doesn't have one, he will have trouble blending in with other kids and feel a little depressed over not having one. So of course they will do anything to convince their parents to buy one and go with the modern society. At least parents are in luck because nowadays they can monitor their kids of what are they doing on their phones and even where they are!! On the other hand it bends their freedom to parents will and they are restricted to experience their lives to the fullest as a kid.

I feel the phones are a trap that we can not get away from. They make it easy to track us, they keep increasing the price of them, phone plans are going through the roof. All a scam.
