I think it is fair to say that Star Wars is such a valuable franchise because of the many many ways that they can use the name to do all sort of merchandising. At first it was just toys, video games, lunchboxes and what not, but now it is literally anything it seems.
I wasn't really a fan of the new films but trust me, it was still a big deal in Chicago when it was released last month as nearly every theater had ONLY that film playing in their 14 theaters.
Merchandising is great and a lot of people put a lot of time and money into acquiring the bits and pieces. But probably not this.
I mean look at that thing. I like Star Wars as much as the next guy but I would be embarrassed to have this in my house and that isn't just because I feel that 50% of the last 4 films were trash. There is fan, super-fan, and then i think we cross over into mental illness right around the line that is at the $5,000 Star Wars refrigerator.
It was all part of a marketing scheme on the part of G.E. that I presume they had to give some money to Disney over.
For all of November and December, the entire appliance section of Best Buy was decked out with Star Wars advertising and I just have to wonder who this is for? I mean, kids might be impacted by this line of marketing but they don't make decisions on high end appliances, at least I hope not.
I think a lot of people complain about how everything is commercialized to the nth degree these days, and this very odd crossover connecting droids (which are machines) and appliances which are also machines and for some reason Chewbacca is kind of proof of that.
In Chicago, we were so absolutely inundated with Star Wars advertisements everywhere you looked that I kind of had a feeling of anger towards the film by the time it was released.
