Fidget spinners are absolutely HUGE right now! This is baffling to a lot of people, because they seem like useless toys. If you are one of the people who thinks fidget spinners are incredibly stupid and just a fad, you're probably in the minority.
The fact is, people absolutely LOVE these little spinning gadgets, and you might be surprised that to learn that as of the writing of this post, nineteen of the twenty best selling toys on Amazon were fidget spinners of some sort!
There have even been lots of claims that fidget spinners have therapeutic value, and are especially useful in helping kids with ADHD focus. However, in this Time.com article, that claim has been disputed by many psychologists who say that there have no been peer-reviewed studies nor scientific evidence to support the idea that they have therapeutic qualities.
Teachers seem to be on the fence when it comes to these gadgets. The majority of teachers find them to be a nuisance and have banned them from the classroom, yet other teachers say they have seen a marked difference in students with low attention spans.
While most people are under the impression that fidget spinners are just a fad, there is a lot of evidence to the contrary. The fact is, fidget and stress reducing toys have been around for years, and they are just as popular with adults as they are with children. Stress balls are considered "fidget items," and they have long been a favorite of office workers and high-powered executives. In fact, fidget items were being used before these types of toys were even developed. If you've ever sat at your desk and clicked a ball point pen over and over -- guess what? You've used a fidget tool!

I work in an emergency room and usually just take care of adult patients. I had a child who was playing with one while she was getting radiological studies done. It certainly did help with distraction for her. Not being familiar with the toy, she had to tell me what it was. Lol made me feel old.

There is a lot of evidence that it helps keep kids occupied/distracted. This is causing some problems in the classroom because I guess some teachers are for them and some against. I would imagine the "old school" teachers probably are not too fond of them. A lot of people say they help kids that have ADHD focus better. However, as I mentioned in the article, there have not been any legitimate studies to prove that theory right or wrong yet.

I completely agree that you'll have some that like them and others that don't. Your article presents that fact very well. I'm pretty"old school"and think if you have children that aren't able to pay attention they need to use that energy in play. My personal opinion is that more outside time and play time is beneficial to children, and toys might not have a place in certain learning settings. If the teacher is allowed to be flexible in lesson plans, he can then adapt to his class to allow play to be incorporated into learning. I don't have the imagination of how a fidget spinner can be used but there are some amazing teachers out there that should have the opportunity to teach their students in whatever way they see fit.

LOL! I couldn't figure out what the big deal with them was at first either. However, I've found that they do actually relieve stress if you are using one let's say, while waiting in the doctors office. It helps keep your mind from constantly thinking about your situation.
