Stick Shift Or Automatic?steemCreated with Sketch.

Does anybody still drive stick shift? I first learned how to drive a stick shift on my dad's Ford Pinto back in the 70's. Then I went to automatic when dad heard people were being burned alive in those Ford Pintos when rear ended. Dad sold it and we were just driving automatics.

In the 80's I got married then divorced in early 90's. Ex-wife left a 79 Nissan Pickup, a 5 speed. Well when my automatic finally died I started driving stick shift again with the 79 Nissan Pickup.

I kept driving the little pickup until a good looking woman with a Grand Torino with no brakes hit me and let me tell you I actually seen the car coming at my driver door in slow motion. So after that my perfectly fine 79 Nissan Pickup became a bashed in lopsided looking 79 Nissan Pickup.

It's driver door wouldn't open. So I had to climb in from the passenger side to get to the driver seat. Can you imagine going on a date and you have to get in first then the date? Well yeah, that did happen. Let me tell you there was not a second date.

Then later on a girl from work wanted me to buy her 89 Nissan Sentra at the time was a 4 speed. I only say at the time cause after a new used motor and a new used standard transmission it is now a 5 speed. I like driving a 5 speed more than a 4 speed.

So to this day I am still driving that 89 Nissan Sentra. I have another used car and a used pickup truck that are 5 speed, but this 89 Nissan Sentra is my favorite. So how about you? Stick shift or Automatic?

I have never in my live driven anything other than stick. Over here in Europe automatic transmissions are rare. At least they were. Nowadays more and more cars are sold with it because they have started to become more economical than stick. Have fun out there and good luck with future posts!

Thanks @rymlen, Yes I heard in Europe it's mostly stick. Here in California it is different. Mostly automatics. Those automatics take forever to get into the right gear. Thanks for your encouragement.

I got a 2005 Ram pickup that is a stick. I like it until I hit a traffic jam. After an hour of clutching, my leg gets wanting to cramp!!!

Yes @old-guy-photos, That does happen. A little stretching might help.

Every car I currently own are manual.92 BMW e36 5sp, 92 Mustang hatch 5 spd, 89 f-150 4x4 4 speed 1st is granny low and my 94 hatch civic 5 spd. I love manual 90% of the time, the other 10% is because I hate getting caught in stop go traffic. But I deal with. The best part about manual to me is that I can easily fix all of these transmission my self with out any special tools. I learn how to drive in a manual Geo Tracker that was hot pink, we called it the Barbie Jeep.

Wow, you can fix your own manual. That is great. My other vehicles are 93 Honda Accord and 91 Chevrolet S10 all manual. I heard about the granny low. Thank you for your comment.

Yep. I had the luxury of growing up with a mechanic Stepfather and a garage at my disposal also growing up in a agriculture community where a lot of people work on their own equipment. Granny low is a great thing to have for towing or off roading. One more cool thing about most old style 4 speed manuals with granny low is they have a thing called a PTO out or auxiliary out put where you can hook equipment to like air pump and/or hydraulic pump for a dump bed, snow plow ect.

Hello @david777111,

I live in the UK and we all drive stick shift here... Well some people do drive automatics, but only a tiny percentage. I have never driven an automatic in my life.

Hi @nickdavison, Here in California most people I know drive an automatic. I think some have never even tried to drive a stick.

90% of europe only drives with stick :) it's less fuel consuming

Thank you @streekiller, yes we all need to save on fuel.

I drive a stick shift. I LOVE it. My little car is a Toyota Yaris and I feel like I'm driving a GoCart. I wonder how many people even know what "popping the clutch" means anymore?! Great post @david777111

Thank you so much @pippininja, Hey "popping the clutch" I haven't heard that saying in a long, long time.
