Sometimes childhood memories sneak up on you out of the blue. Other times they come hurling at you like an unstoppable giant robot! What was your favorite toy as a child?

Last night I had a few drinks with my friends... then I had a few more. My head is a little cloudy so I honestly don't know exactly how I ended up taking a walk down memory lane last night. In between checking out posts here on steemit (sorry for any incoherent replies I left at around 2:00AM), I saw this picture out of the corner of my eye...

Do you see those objects in his rocket launcher? Today we call those "choking hazards". In the 1970s we called them AWESOME!!!!!!

As soon as I saw that image, I was immediately transported back to 1976. Thanks red wine for helping me to make that journey!

In 1976, we only had 5 televisions channels. I will pause to let that sink in for a moment. Only Five.

In fact, you couldn't always receive the fifth channel clearly. It was UHF station 44. Sometimes in order to receive the signal, one had to strategically attach tinfoil and a coat hanger to the regular antenna in order to get a somewhat clear signal. Even then you might need to try positioning the contraption in many different ways before finding the exact spot. But wait there's more! After finding the perfect spot for the makeshift antenna, you had to be careful where you sat. One wrong move by anyone in the room and the picture was gone.

Sounds like a ridiculous hassle in order to access one more television channel... but that was a 25% increase in channels. Think about that. Mind blown!

I would have attached the antenna to my sister's braces if it meant I could watch these shows (actually I probably would have just done that for fun).

More importantly, channel 44 is the station that played reruns of all the bad 1960s cartoons where nothing but the backgrounds moved. Most crucial of all...it also broadcast the coolest shows from Japan including Spectreman, Ultraman (two completely different shows I assure you) and...

Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot

To a five year old boy, these were the coolest shows in the history of time*. Every kid I knew watched them religiously. As a result, we all fell madly in love with giant Japanese robots.

Recognizing an opportunity to make a tremendous profit from this love affair with giant Japanese robots, Mattel decided to exploit this and create the coolest toys in the history of time*.

Mattel brought us...

As every boy began worshipping Mattel for bringing such greatness into our world, every parent cursed them.

Shogun Warriors cost a whopping $14.99!!!

Wait. That isn't a lot at all. Every parent should have been thrilled. Heck buy two of each so your kid could have extra choking hazards.

See those missiles? They had my sister's name written all over them.

But those are in 1976 dollars. To put things in perspective, in 1976 in the United States...

  • Average Cost of new house $43,400.00.
  • Average Income per year $16,000.00.
  • Average Monthly Rent $220.00.
  • Cost of a gallon of Gas 59 cents.

Adjusted for inflation, these toys cost $65 each. Most parents I knew in 1976 had no urge to spend that on their child's entire collection of toys let alone one robot. Stupid responsible parents! (Just don't let my kids hear I said that.)

Luckily for me, my mom had some friends at work who didn't have children of their own. When I wasn't at my grandmas, I hung out at the restaurant at which she worked. I kind of became the unofficial grandchild for many regular patrons of the restaurant. One year for my birthday, they all chipped in and bought me the coolest toy in the history of time!*

Not only did they buy me a Shogun Warrior, they bought me the right Shogun Warrior. They bought me...

I have chills looking at that... I also clearly have problems.

Don't get me wrong, all of these TWO FOOT TALL robots were awesome, but mine was the best.

It is important to note, that no one I knew had more than one of these. No one had the complete set of three. That would be ridiculous. You had to team up with your friends if you hoped to bring the three Shogun Warriors together in one ultimate battle to save the entire universe. Sometimes you made a new friend simply based on him having the missing Shogun Warrior from your group. Sometimes people only pretended to be your friend because you had the coolest Shogun Warrior. (But as long as they brought Godzilla so you had a common enemy to fight... who cares?)

But back to Mazinga. Not only did he have the fiercest looking face, he also had the coolest gear.

Is it just me or is there a choir of angels singing every time I look at this picture?

Mazinga sports a couple of obvious features. He was armed with a sword. It was cool but nothing special. But his other hand... OH MY GOD!!!! It's a freaking rocket launcher! And these weren't the 2017 "safety-first" rockets of today where they just pop out a little and you have to pretend they are actually firing. No these were 1970s "shoot your sister right in her stupid freaking eye" rockets. These were "if you shoot them in your friends mouth... they could actually die" rockets. These were the greatest rockets in the history of time.* And there were TEN of them!

As if life threatening rockets weren't enough, the designers added a couple of more features just to assure this would be the greatest toy in the history of time.*

Do you see that right hand without the rockets. "Huh hum just a boring hand that can hold a sword." No! That hand can be removed so you can pretend that Mazinga has a rocket punch that can knock other robots, Godzilla, or your sister's puny Barbies unconscious.

But wait there's more! Do you see his head? (Of course you do. It is freaking awesome!) That red, black and blue piece sticking out of the top of his head is actually a mini space ship. You can remove that thing and throw it right at your sister's face! (Presumably)

I have no conclusion. I am too hyped up. I will simply thank steemit and all of you for allowing me to indulge myself and take this walk through one of my fondest childhood memories of playing with my giant robot.

Now to check out Ebay...

I know they would be about 120 years old right now... but I wonder if any of my adoptive grandparents are still around and looking for a grandson to spoil.

$150!

Not happening.

What was your favorite toy as a child?

*None of the uses of that phrase are hyperbole. I'm merely stating facts.

@hanshotfirst, I have a large vintage Hot Wheels collection that I started in 1978. Hot wheels are my ultimate toy memory. Steem On!

Of course man. that is why you do all the cool car posts! My uncle Steve was huge into Hot Wheels back in the day. I used to play with them all the time at my grandma's.

I never played with them

Interesting topic, love the idea. Mine was my Playstation 1, @hanshotfirst. Love the memories! I'll be following you to see more awesome content.

Best Regards,
@abn

I was in my 20s when that came out but I still had to have it.

I had one of the old Wild West cap guns. It was hours of tinnitus-inducing fun! It probably scratched "piano tuner" off of my future career list but it was worth it.

LOL. I had the round caps and the paper ones. Loved them!

G I Joes....and I still have them :)

The big guys or the 3 3/4 inch ones? I had both.

smaller ones

I don't know which one was based on the other. We never saw Mazinger where i live but we got plenty of Goldorak.

They all borrow from each other an they are awesome!

Very nice post i loved reading it! Followed and resteemed!
My favorite toy was Lego :D

The Lego now is so much better! My guys all had smiles all the time lol.

Also, good post

Slimer from the TheRealGhostbusters

I remember both of those cartoons. So sad they had to call one "the real"... kind of ahead of their time for twitter handles.

Yeah, because these guys were first:

Yep. A gorilla? Why?

I don't know but he was called Tracey, the Gorilla. And they sit in G.B. aka Ghost Buggy. :D

It was my X wing fighter (80s version). Unfortunately I lost it.

But you will always have the memories!

That's true and including all those childhood battles against the Empire!

Thanks! And this image really fits the theme!

Fantastic post :) I love giant robots. Though when I was growing up, the series I watched all the time was Voltron with the five robot lions that combined together to make a single super awesome robot.

Oh yeah! My little brothers watch that. I pretended I was watching it for them... but I loved them!

And I'll form... the head!

Then we'll form blazing sword ;)

Gyroscopes and magnets fascinated me as a kid

Did you become an engineer? Just curious.

wow great perception ..Yes a mechanical engineer
Am i that easy to read lol

LOL. It just makes sense. Those are very cool and unique toys.

I was all about them Lincoln Logs!

Old school! I love it.

When I was really young (maybe around 3 or 4) I had a Kermit the Frog stuffed toy I used to play with a lot. He lost an eye (I'm pretty sure that was my fault) and my mom sewed it so all his stuffing wouldn't fall out. Memories...

That is cute!

Yeaah, I loved that toy lol

I'm a girl, but I loved playing with G.I. Joe (hated Barbie!)... Another childhood memory is Play-Doh !

That is awesome! I had so much pay dough... but the end it was all brown from being mixed so many times.

Haha! I love this, it brings me back to my cousin Brad's room. I'm not sure if he had the shogun warriors, but he definitely had a complete set of transformers...and you would drool over the star wars action figures because he had them all set up on shelves and I'm pretty sure he had every single one you could buy. For some reason I loved the storm troopers. Most games we would play I liked to be the good guy, but when we played with his star wars figures I didn't mind being Darth because of the storm troopers, lol.

For myself it was a toss up-when I was feeling girly, strawberry shortcake dolls were my favorite, otherwise-transformers. I might have been the only girl my age with a significant amount of them, mainly because I had to have what Brad had.

Those were the heavy metal transformers too if I'm not mistaken. My sister had Strawberry Shortcake and her friends. What was the bad guy? Some pie guy?

They were awesome, lots of choke worthy parts ;)

Murky and Lurky! They were the bad guys, lol. There was this Strawberry Shortcake Christmas record that had the twelve days of Christmas and Murky and Lurky would jump in on number five with Five Lumps of Coal, that I loved!

My favorite toy was a clockwork fish, it bent and swam like real. I still remember her.

Cool. "clockwork" is not a term I hear a lot. But I get it. It was electronic.

I always enjoy a good dose of nostalgia from seeing a childhood toy!
One of my favorites was this Polly Pocket compact case:

My nieces had those! They were always looking for the shoes.

The compact dolls didn't have shoes, but we had a ton of Polly Pocket dolls that had clothes and shoes and we always lost them! I wish they still made toys as good as they used to!

I loved playing with a Rubik's cube, and I was a pro at taking it apart and putting it back together perfectly. I also had a doll which I named Bernadette. She was blue and yellow and I loved her very much. I apparently stole her from a shop one day when we went to town and when we got to the car I had the doll under my arm and my mom had no idea where I got the doll from. She was my favorite doll in the whole world.....stolen and all...

LOL. I know that trick!

That is hilarious!

Great post!

Sadly I did not have any "cool" favorite toy when I was little, I loved pretty much all I had. I guess the only one I really loved was a batman toy that was missing an arm.

Somehow the poor character always ended up injured in my imagination, whenever I was tired of pretending he actually has two arms instead of one.

I don't have him, sadly, I gave all my toys to other kids when I grew older, and even tho I don't regret it, that batman figurine was the best and I still miss it.

That toy made you use your imagination eve more. That is a great toy!

Everytime I visit Japan, I become a kid again and have visited the Ultraman statue more than once! Thanks for the flashback.

Wait. There's a statue?????

probably more than one! You can visit the Bandai corp headquarters and they have a statue. I have made quite a few selfies there!

my favorite toys is gun and ultramens :D

Yeah I had a ton of fun playing with Star Wars guns as a kid.

hahah that amazing i want back my life kid :D

I was also a big fan of this series but now occasionally watch it on youtube rewinding the old memories.

Yeah. I need to show my son.

How old is he?

My favorite toy growing up was a Daisy Red Rider BB Gun!! I also like my Transformers and GI Joe's.

Oh no. You'll shoot your eye out!

We did actually have a BB gun fight and I shot my friend in the face. That was our last BB gun fight.

Indeed i had several of this when i was a child, and all my cousins had one too, we use to battle each other, it was a great time!..

You had Shogun warriors? Awesome!

Thanks for the post, well written and brought back memories.
I had many toys but my best was Lego :)

Yeah I loved Lego... but I wanted my guys to be mad sometimes and they were always smiling!

LOL!

I had some good laughs reading this. What was my favorite toy? Well, I was kind of a geek growing up... My computer was my favorite toy. Gaming was an addiction of sorts... Too bad I grew up!

That makes complete sense. I'm from an older generation.

This was an interesting article with nice pictures! Looking forward to more from you!

Oh man. You know me. I always have more of this silliness.

I loved My Little Pony as a kid. We didn't have much money so we didn't have many toys. I remember my sister and I had one each. Purple and yellow but can't remember the names

I'm sure my daughter would know their names. She loves those. Did you play a lot with your sister? Have a good friend or sibling is much better than any toy... even a showgun warrior.

Yes, my sister and I played together a lot since we are only 2 years apart. Too bad she lives so far away now (she lives in the US)

Oh my god!!!! You had the Shogun! I was so envious of my friend who had one of those, we spent hours coming up with amazing adventures for that thing, where it waded through endless waves of He-Man and Skeltor and little green plastic army men....

Nevertheless, my first favorite toy when I was a very small kid was the original Big Wheel:
source
I even rode it on my very first (and last) attempt at running away when I was like 5 or 6 years old. I made it like 5 blocks before the police gave me a ride back home. My friend with the Shogun also had The Big Green Machine, which had the ability to do really cool skids and we would hold street races on the hill next to my house, so much fun!

Thanks for the blast from the past. Nice post!

Oh man we must be the same age! I wanted a Green Machine so bad! I had the Big Wheel though.

Amazing robot . I'm following you please follow me and give me upvoted

Thats a great post really enjoyed reading it

Nice post

Great post!! Keep it up :)
By the way, I'm following you now
Cheers

You had good idea in post. Success for you my friend.

They all look like the Lion Voltron to me mate (my personal favourite). SK.

Oh and transformers - but I could never afford Optimus Prime as a kid. And it still hurts.

I cannot believe some of the stuff you write on I have not seen or thought about in --- decades- in some cases man.

Wow!

I wanted to let you know about this post I did too, I know we talk less than ever but I respect your work and try to go to an older post to do this so it is settled down activity wise and is less spammy feeling LOL.

Have a nice week man. I have mentioned stuff / my friends to you in the past:
