The Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo: A Living Museum for Geeks

in funny •  8 years ago

It's a miracle! This old man did not break his hip while walking 20 miles over two days at C2E2 (I mean me... not Stan Lee). Even if I had, it would have been worth it because I got to see a ton of cool stuff like this...

After two days of icing my knees, stretching my leg and back muscles, drinking lots of fluids and whining about these self inflicted ailments (yeah I'm the type of guy who says "my lower back is killing me") I have finally recovered from my weekend at The Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo.

In addition to what I learned from day one, I also learned a couple more things.

First, I absolutely suck at photography. One of my favorite things about steemit has been my newfound appreciation for the art of photography. It truly is an art... and I truly can't do it. And that is ok. I am not fishing for people to say, "No hanshotfirst, your photos are great!" They are not... and I don't care. I am completely comfortable in my skin and can freely admit that I am bad at things like: sports, drawing, doing shots, spacial awareness, acrobatics, sitting still in meetings, reading fluency, foreign languages, photography, and shoving a living snake... Never mind. You get the point. I don't get my sense of pride or self worth from these things so its cool.

So wait. Which way do I point this? Do I really need to stay steady?

If you want to see some excellent photography, this platform is blessed with many artists. Simply click on the "photography" tag on the right side of your home screen and prepare to have you mind blown! The ones below are simply evidence of the fun I had and the memories I made. They are not "art" and I am cool with that.

Second, I have far more patience for adults than I ever thought possible. I have always joked that I work with teenagers because I hate adults. I expect teenagers to be jackasses sometimes. They are teenagers. Their brains aren't even fully formed. But when someone over 25 acts like a jackass... I am far less patient (although I am getting much better at it thanks to a strategy of trying to put myself in their shoes).

This year the convention was packed! It was by far the most crowded it has ever been (Stan Lee's farewell tour probably has a lot to do with that). Trying to navigate the crowd is nearly identical to a terrible traffic jam. Apparently self driving cars may make those a thing the past (check out @trafalgar hilarious and informative expose on those for more info). Well if that does indeed work, the next move is self driving hover boards.

Have you ever been in traffic because of a gaper's block? Well these conventions are one giant gaper's block. People trudge along at a snail's pace and rubber neck in all directions because of all of the cool things to see. It's really nobody's fault. Its just the way that it is. Cool stuff attracts people. People like to look at cool stuff. Our bodies are designed to have our heads pointed in the direction we are moving. If a person is at these conventions for any other reason than to slowly wander and look around... their freaking heads would explode!

Luckily, there aren't many people there who don't "get it". As a result, everyone is so patient and kind. I have never heard the words "sorry" or "excuse me" so many times (many of them coming out of my own mouth). They should probably put a sign up before you enter that reads: "You are about to enter the most crowded room you have ever been in. People are going to bump into you. You will bump into to other people. There is no need to apologize. We all get it. Have fun!" (Actually now that I think about tit, there are a lot of places that could use that sign... including social media sites).

Seriously dude. It's ok. It's not your fault. But please get your hand out of my pocket.

To me, C2E2 was like going to a museum created especially for geeks. I saw a ton of really cool toys, comic books, art and T-shirts. But what really pushed this experience over the top were the "living exhibits"... the cosplayers. I am not a big cosplay guy. I have dressed up a few times in order to match what my kids were wearing but it was always something really easy and it was more for them than for me. But for the people who enjoy it, these conventions are their Super Bowl. I saw some really cool and fun costumes this weekend.

So what did I see?

The cosplay pictures were all taken by me (except for the awesome first one... no way I could pull that off).

Looks like an awesome event, I'm glad you endured to walk all the way through it ;)
It's always amazing for me to see how much effort some people put into their costumes. Some of them are so intricate!
Thanks for sharing your experience!

Thanks! And thanks for swinging by. I'm a big fan of your work on here. The promo video you did a while back was really great for the platform!

Thank you for the compliment, appreciate it!

My brother sent me this, and of course since it's star wars I thought of you :) It cracked me up, I thought this was the more appropriate comment section to put it in:

I love this video. My son and I sing it all the time!

Nice, haha, I'll need to watch it a few more times so I can sing it too :)

Wow your photos are amazing :p. Have you had your fill now of being geeky. Looks like you had a fab time :)

Thanks! The costumes were amazing. I just wanted to record them for fun. Sadly I will never get my fill. I seem to have a bottomless pit that I try to fill with geekiness. I call it "my brain".

You have a brain. Has it been proven hehe

Sadly... no. I was assuming. But now I'm not so sure.

There definitely something there just not sure whether to call it a brain. Lol. I'm so glad you can take a joke :)

It may be my greatest skill... and I'm pretty good with a bow staff.

Hiding behind hubby just in case

You have nothing to fear...

I didn't know Usagi Yojimbo was still a thing. I have some of those comics from the late 80's or early 90's somewhere.

I know! And that costume was utterly amazing. He did a little sword demonstration but sadly I did not record it.

IDK what that even is

lol

The samurai rabbit.

Thanks.... I appreciate that.

We've had about eight ninja turtle movies, and exactly zero samurai rabbits, no flaming carrots either.

Yeah what is up with that?

I guess people are more likely to fork over cash for turtles. Personally, I'd like to see a Cerebus movie. Aardvarks never get any play.

Can't wait for communities on here. We can start the animal superhero community!

LOL!!!

When I first saw it... I wondered if it was TMNT related.......

flaming carrots, that would be a beaut!

Wow, I really missed out. I had no idea.

It kinda looks like he plans to save the city with a pile of tampons here

LOL

Very interesting photos. Looks like fun

Thanks! It really was fun.

It looks like lots of fun

OMG!!! I whish so much I could visit it one day! It looks like heaven! Thank you so much for sharing!:) Resteemed!

Thanks! It really was a lot of fun. Lots of happy geeks in one place. Always a good time!

You inspired me to wtite a post about our Kyiv Comic Con. We already had two (and it's a big step for Ukraine, we had none earlier), and nexy weel will be the third one:)

Looks very cool!

Awwwwww!:) It was the second one:) Yet the only thing similar to other contrys was that we had to wait for 5 hours to get inside:) Hope this year ut'll be organized better:)

Good luck! I hope you have a great time!

Thank you so much! And for steems, and for compliments about my art! I feel really happy when people love what I create!:)

So much happy geekiness LOL

I love it.

Followed.

Dancing robot is super)))

That was one of my favorites for sure. Whoever made that spent a lot of time, effort and money.

I'm taking my daughter to a Supernatural Convention, but next on her list is ComicCon...is this what I should expect? Not for the former, I've already been to one of those and fortunately there are seats and the actors talk and answer questions from a stage ;)
Funny that you brought up hoverboards, I mentioned them in trafalgar's post.
Also you may have made a freudian slip (now that I think about tit...) LOL

What city? Some comic cons are HUGE. But yes. Lots of vendors selling comics toys and shirts. Some cool artists. Celebrities charging way too much for autographs. Lots of people in costumes. Bring your patience and a big bag of money. But it really is fun. How old is she? I know you told me before but I can't remember. Oh boy I will have to find that slip.

She's sixteen but this probably won't happen until next year so she'll be seventeen. And I'm not entirely certain which one we'll end up at, she'll be looking to see who will be where, but the most likely will be either NYC, somewhere in NJ, Pittsburgh or DC. (As these places are all in a four to six hour driving range for me ;)

Wow! Some awesome choices! Obviously NYC is huge. I think you have the type of personality where you will drink it all in and enjoy yourself. It is definitely a unique experience. I bet she will love it.

I figured NYC would be a big one. I have family on Long Island as well, so that would actually be the most ideal, I could stay with them and take the train in :)

Looks like a fun time! Those are some cool costumes.

Yeah I can't believe how creative (and crazy) some people are. It was a fun weekend for sure.

Awesome Post thanks for the great read

Thanks! It was a fun event and enjoyed putting this together.

It certainly looks like a lot of fun .... I love cosplay myself :D happy days keep the great post coming

Ach the photography is absolutely fine!! Great post dude. I love these events. Nicely topped off with the sheer menace of the dancing robot!

Thanks! I really love this platform. I wanted to take those photos just so I could remember the cool stuff I saw. Thanks to the blockchain, they will be out there for eternity!

That robot was amazing. I can't imagine the time, effort, and money that went into putting it together.

That's one of the things that i find do utterly awesome about this platform too, stuff being around for eternity!

... annnnd Batgirl's 2nd appearance in the series.

And some other beauts.

Actually that is a 2nd batgirl. There were probably more.

I noticed she was not the same one but it IS Batgirl afterall...... there can only...be...one....

  • right? Like Santa Claus

lol, the original!

Or Highlander...

But we can make an exception for her.

I was out all afternoon but left your page up so when I got back I had planned on checking your page hoping for......

This Update!

which happened. I was honestly hoping you would do part 2 or 3 of this for a series update.

I noticed Batgirl made another appearance here.

Niiiice

I love your stuff man, it is so down to earth relateable.

Great job as always, your photos are honestly perfect LOL.

Thanks for the kind words man. You are the best! The pictures did just what I wanted... record some fun memories.

I loved the list of random stuff you feel you are not good at.

LOL

Honestly, you could write books, people like you and @meesterboom that lay stuff out so well and with so much fun or well spoken in outreach type things, are people I really admire.

  • Did you see the link to my autism post I dropped on one of your older posts before I left the house today? It was on your autism post also. I wanted you to see it.

I did. It was awesome!
