The Yasaka-no-To Pagoda in the Higashiyama traditional district remains of Kyoto, even all of Japan, for the atmosphere of the traditional neighborhood and the unique view. As much as it is crowded with tourists during the daytime and photographers at dusk and dawn, it is still one of my favorite sights. About halfway between the famous Kiyomizu-dera temple and the downtown Yasaka shrine, it's surrounded by unique landmarks. A fun little tip - you can climb the inside staircase, which is quite special for a Japanese pagoda.
Personally it's almost a travel rite of mine to set up for dusk photos on the old streets here. Typically that will mean I'm joined by a few more photographers, and it's a funny routine to see the pack of photographers pack and move each time a taxi rolls by.
