If your anything like me, you also grew up with the 5-second rule! I also always said it in front of my kids if i dropped a piece of food on the floor , you know like an M & M, or a piece of popcorn, whatever the case may be you would just need to say " 5- Second rule " pick it up and enjoy, RIGHT! Aparently WRONG! After all these generations , and handing this rule down for centuries, someone had to come along and do a food study on this to prove us all wong! Thanks alot to the researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey! πŸ˜œπŸ‘Ž

So aparently in this new study bacteria can contaminate food that falls on the floor instantaneously ! The researchers said the 5 second rule is a significant oversimplification of what actually happens when bacteria transfers from a surface to food.
This isnt the first research to conclude that the favorite excuse for why that yummy snack that fell on the ground is still OK to eat is wrong!

The research did find that the longer contact time means more bacterial transfer , but the type of food and surface is just as - or more - important!
The researchers tested watermelon, bread, bread and butter, and gummy candy on stainless steel , ceramic tile, wood, and carpet,! They found the watermelon had the most contamination! And that transfer of bacteria is affected the most by moisture!

So there you have it! I really dont know how we all survived after all these years! Lol! I think at least we built up a better imune system! And to hell with the researchers! Im still alive to tell the tale! I would love to hear coments from all those who actually survived the 5 second rule! And could care less about the bacteria! And would rather build up their imune system! MUNCH ON FELLOW STEEMERS! MUNCH ON! πŸ€‘πŸ‘

Cool beans. Kids know what's up.

Oooooh YA! πŸ˜‰

Keep your rule! We all know it works. If we must listen to all the stories going around, we will eat nothing and live in sealed jar...

The things we used to do are a health risk now. Children are missing out lol

I saw a TV show do their own tests and any contact with the floor contaminated the food. As you say it depends on the type of food and where you drop it. I'm dropped plenty of stuff at home and still ate it, but I probably wouldn't in a public place.

There's also evidence that kids are not exposed to enough 'germs' to build up resistance, but basic hygiene is why we live longer these days.
