It is believed to be of ancient origin, directly descended from hounds and pariah dogs of ancient Africa.
A medium size, slender built and well muscular. It is agile and supple and can run at great speed. They are found in a wide range of colors with or without markings. Eye rims, lips and nose should be outlined black. Ears erect, half erect or drooping. Also with or without a ridge.
These dogs roamed freely for centuries,in and around rural settlements. The Africanis combines attachment to humans with a need for space. Traditionally living close to humans, other dogs, livestock and domestic animals and has a natural tendency to guard and protect.
Very loyal and courageous, tremendous stamina, natural survival instice, hunting prowless, intelligent and very playful. Good with kids and very social.
This beautiful dog displays unspoiled canine behavior, with a high level of facial expressions and body language.
It is a dog which needs neither pampering nor special food. It is constantly healthy and has over the years developed a natural resistant against internal and external parasites.
Contrary to all modern breeds, the Africanis is not an artificially selected breed, but a landrace. It is the result of natural selection and physical and mental adaption to various African ecological niches. It has not been selected or bred for appearance. Nature made it it to fit the conditions of Africa.
In traditional Southern Africa philosophy, the most important requirement for a dog is to be wise. For centuries, only the fittest and cleverest dogs have survived to give us one of the rare remaining aboriginal populations in the world.
