Fushimi Inari Shrine, a temple at the foot of a small mountain of the same name, is the most magical place not only in Kyoto but in all of Japan, named after the Shinto goddess Inari. The goddess has been worshipped for more than 1,300 years. She is the patroness of rice, the country's main crop, which cemented her central position in the agricultural economy of medieval Japan. According to various estimates, more than a third of all Shinto shrines in the country are dedicated to her. The scarlet corridors of the Fushimi Inari torii climb the mountain at sunset and are guarded by mysterious foxy kitsune, messengers of the goddess.
