A first leg match for the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, Barcelona was hosting Valencia who were looking for a positive result that would give them a chance against an all-powerful club blaugrana, but their efforts were hampered after a great play by Leo Messi that would end with a goal by Suarez to give him the victory 1-0 to Barcelona.
A first half where both teams had few clear chances for the goal, the game would be stuck in the middle of the field generating little danger from both teams, Messi could not connect with Luis Suarez, while the squatted valencia waited to find a counter that made them inaugurate the scoreboard, the first half would culminate with the initial 0-0.
For the second half Valencia would try to generate more games, with one or another approach to the goal of Cillessen, which would make react to Barcelona with a great play of Lionel Messi that after avoiding three rivals, the Argentinean star sends a perfect center to the head of Luis Suarez for the Uruguayan scored 1-0 for Ernesto Valverde.
The rest of the match Valencia would press for a draw but they did not know how to turn their game into the goal they were looking for, Barcelona held out and takes the lead for the second leg next Thursday 8 February in Mestalla.
