The Show Goes On
Sport can be cruel at times, and Futsal is no different. After 21 Rounds of action both SFL and Championship Finals were decided by a single goal in extra time, none more dramatic that Luke Tidy's ridiculous chip over Ahmed Rahimi with a second to play to give Fremantle FC a memorable finals victory over Claremont Cambio Cumbre.
Tomorrow night the show goes on. Pro Futsal continues its rise, marked by continued club growth, player opportunities, packed out finals and two live streamed games each week, 8pm Fridays and the early Saturday afternoon game.
While there is plenty to talk about, we will try and focus mainly on the SFL, with the opening game 8pm Friday featuring last seasons semi finalsts Canning Ultra Tigers against La Cumbre. While some feel Cumbres finals loss was the end of an era, they should write Cumbre off at their own peril, with some hungry youth players looking to
stamp their mark amongst men.
Spiritual leader Nestor Fonseca claims he won't be seeing as much playing time this season, but no one is buying that line. The Tigers will line up much the same as last season, with the addition of Big Jamie Dunn from Stirling, who ended his playing career there with two rash challenges in as many minutes in the elimination final loss to Fremantle.
Following that game, Championship heavyweights Spearwood Lions headed by the old fox Sirash Sasikumar will look to open their SFL account with three points against a possibly depleted Stirling Braza side that has lost key signings Stephan Eriksson (Carioca) and Alek Kukic (Cockburn). While Spearwood were super cagey in their Grand Final win over
Longobarda in the Championship, perhaps winning that encounter will allow them to loosen up and find their feet in the SFL. They will need to do that quickly to avoid early relegation pressure.
Saturday afternoons early game features Champions Fremantle looking to get straight back to the top of the table against the Murdoch Warriors, who as their name suggests are more than capable of an upset here, given they played very close games last season with largely the same squads.
The final game of the 2018 SFL Winter Season will kick off on Wednesday when South Perth, fresh from one of the most controversial weeks in SFL history, look to show they really do belong in the SFL. They finished the Championship in first place last season, although didn't make it through the playoffs, but will find it tougher against a Cockburn EWA side featuring former Fremantle, Murdoch, Cumbre and Stirling flanker Alek "Cool Kid" Kukic.
