It's been said more than once by many a great man that the future is not something that you predict, but rather create. Those who spend all their time guessing what the future will be, are generally always wrong, while those who mold the future and are making it come true, making it happen, doing it, are the ones who create it. That makes sense right? Okay so, let's talk shall we?
There was an interesting article in ARC Magazine in May 2012 titled; "ARC 1.2: Post Human Conditions" and a sub-article titled; "Arc 1.2's Seoul Searching Reveals a Glimpse of the Future" where Simon Ings writes: "South Korea has gone from impoverished feudal backwater to liberal economic superpower in a generation - yet its people don't talk about the future much. So Arc commissioned Canadian science fiction writer Gord Sellar to find out whether the South Koreans know something the rest of us don't."
Well, maybe there is something that the South Koreans had not considered, and the Americans won't admit? This notion of Calvinistic Fate is not common to all cultures, in fact, the entire notion is based in mysticism in a way, secondly, the South Koreans were able to tame the future, by creating it, and pushing forward to make it happen. The future in their case, in Seoul is turning out just as they are creating it, or as they loosen the reigns or in this case tighten them, they are getting exactly the future they are creating.
There is a difference between talking about the future, predicting it, and getting busy doing it with goals, plans, strategies, and will power. Is the future that South Korea is creating the right one, or it is an example of creating the future they have chosen? Just because something looks like the future, doesn't mean it is better that way. Humans still have intrinsic needs, and one has to ask if those needs are being met? Some folks living there may say; no. Others visiting may just say; Wow! In awe.
The reality is that South Korea didn't talk about it, they did it, which is really how you get anything done in the real world isn't it. Next, Korea has a wonderful trading partner, the US, which has allowed a lopsided trade policy for decades. The US unfortunately did the same thing with China, which also looks like the future in many places, Shanghai for instance as Paris Hilton noted. Perhaps, you might all think on this.
