Much easier in the UK. Huge competition in the market between several large and medium sized bookmakers. Bookmakers are also permitted to advertise on TV (although the majority limit their advertising to sports channels). Tax is paid at the point of placing the bet, by the bookmakers (not the person placing the bet), and all winnings are tax free for the person placing the bet.

Wow I had no idea that was the case! What would you say are the biggest books there? And bookmakers are taxed on a bet win or lose?

Yes, bookmakers are taxed irrespective of win or loss. The two biggest books by far are Soccer and Horse Racing. The next books down are probably Rugby Union, Golf and Boxing. You can pretty much bet on anything though. Largest book makers are still dictated by the highstreet (Ladbrokes, Coral, William Hill and Paddy Power), however there are a few big online bookmakers that are hugely popular (Bet365 and Bet Victor are two such examples).
