For years I've only ever watched others play games because... well, I suck.
In the last six months or so, through lots of encouragement, I've finally moved past side scrollers and moved into the big world of FPS games. Sometimes I still end up looking at the ground and moving sideways, but my gaming has vastly improved. Especially while using a keyboard and mouse.
It seems I was never meant for console. PC makes so much more sense to me. I still suck, but I suck a little less.
But anyway, now I spend a lot of time in Steam's free section seeing what all is kicking around. Tucked in with the hipster story rich games and weird visual novels, I found Hellbound by Saibot Studios.
And it is the best discovery to date.
Hellbound, with a logo very similar to that of DOOM, touts to be a "90's FPS, 20 years later".
It is goddamn brilliant.
Am I being mocked? I feel like I am being mocked.
The load screen. OooooOoo! SO OMINOUS!
Fuck. Yes. My body is ready.
It is played in waves like you would see in Call of Duty Zombies. It is extremely fast-paced and reminiscent of Borderlands in camera movement and speed, but for some reason, that doesn't put me off. In fact, it makes me enjoy it even more!
You can switch from first person to third, simply by pressing E, which is convenient for those that don't dig FPS! Also, you can swap weapon sides! NEAT!
And when you have time (you really won't) the scenery, though spoopy and scary, is beautifully done. Lightning crackles in the distance while you massacre demons!
Orc demons?
But my favorite bit?
BLOODY EXPLOSIONS!
Yes... come get ya some.
YES! YEEEEEEEEEES!
So satisfying.
Annnnnnnnd then I died for the 8th time, not even surviving 60 seconds. But that is mainly because I am not used to this game. Or playing many games with efficiency. But I'm working on it!
Not bad, indeed!
As it stands, Hellbound Survival Mode is... well, only survival mode. They have a Kickstarter going with a goal of $40,000 to make a single person campaign.
I never thought I would be excited about the concept of a game, but I hope it takes off because it is just glorious. Taking your nostalgia and making it fast paced, high energy, and full of high res carnage?
I. Fucking. Love. This. Game.
If you want to give it a try, head to steam! It's free!
