ME AND GAMES (4)...FINALLY BACK TO TENNIS

in games •  7 years ago

I found out, a few years ago, that the name 'Lawn Tennis' was no longer in popular usage. It was mostly used in the past when the game was only played on the grass court or lawn. But over the years, different surfaces have been used for playing the game. We now have clay courts, grass courts, concrete courts, and so on. Hence, the game is now just called 'Tennis'. So afore times we used to have 'Table Tennis' and 'Lawn Tennis', but now we have 'Table tennis' and 'Tennis'. Make no mistake, the two games (tennis and table tennis) have little or no similarity apart from the name.

The bat is used to play table tennis but a tennis racquet is used in the tennis game. The counting is totally different. What's a simple way to explain how the counting is done? OK, let me try. For each participant or competitor, the first point is called a fifteen (15). When there's no point or zero point, it is known as 'zero' or 'LOVE'. The second point is called a thirty (30). The third a forty (40) and the fifth is called 'Game', marking the end of that game section. So if Paul and John were opponents, could have scores like this:
Paul 0 - 0 John (Love-Love)
15 - 0 (15 - love
30 - 0 (30 - love)
30 - 15 (30 - 15)
40 - 15 (40 -15)
40 - 30 (40 - 30)
at this point (40 - 30), if Paul gets one more point, it's 'Game' and Paul takes that game. But if at that point (40:30), John was the one who got the point, then it would be 40 - 40, which in tennis is also known as deuce. A deuce means that

I just read your previous post and that got me to this one. You seem like a pro in the game with a lot of experience. Tennis was pretty hard for me to play but i do enjoy watching the game. I am a big fan of Andy Murray. He is my favourite Tennis player.

Tennis isn't difficult to learn if you have a good coach or willing player-friend. If you really have the zeal to learn, just locate any nearby recreation club or stadium that has a tennis court and search for young lads (e.g. teenagers) who play well or ask for a tennis coach to put you through. I'm definitely not a pro, even though I could have been if I had taken it a bit more seriously over the years. Now I just play for fun and exercise. Trust me, when you play with friends, it's really fun.

I play Table tennis and Badminton. Although it's been a while since I played. It is really fun playing with friends. I remember playing badminton with a friend of mine regularly for like a month. I lost a lot of weight in that short period of time.
Tennis is something I will have to give a try in the nearest future based on your recommendation. Thank you @chinosky for the update.

I was curious about the scoring system in tennis and why the words deuce and love were used, so I did some research. My research revealed that these terms were borrowed from the French. The word “Deuce” comes from the French word “à deux le jeu” which means "to both is the game" which roughly means “the two players have equal scores)." Maybe one day you can write a piece about the origins of the game.

Interesting insight from @acrobot. You guys are making the game of Tennis sound pretty interesting. I like the word "a deux le jeu". Nice of you to do further research on the game. Do you play Tennis?

I guess someday I will. Thanks.
