You're right, it didn't get bad ratings, but it's definitely way overshadowed by Civ.

That depends on the timeframe that we are talking about, I guess. The first Pirates! game was out before Civ. Some of the others weren't competing with Civs either. :-D I've just played that last Pirates! Remake a couple of months ago (when I had a computer at my disposal), and it still kicks so much ass. I is a lot like calling Star Control 2 underrated (and it was in top ten games of all time for ten years? More?) Maybe a better title would be "undeservingly forgotten", because a lot of gamers don't know about them.
