I was one of the early adopters of the Nintndo Gamecube. While everyone else was wrapped up in their Playstations, this guy was still a huge fan of the Nintendo franchise, particularly because of their system-specific titles involving Mario, Samus, and of course Link.
The Wind Waker sees us following the usual path of needing to save someone from the clutches of the evil wizard Ganon and of course retrieving parts of the Triforce. This should be an extremely familiar plot for anyone familiar with the Zelda franchise. The Wind Waker was the 10th installment in the franchise and was extremely well-received. I was one of the few that disagreed with this notion.
The major problem that I had with it is embodied in the picture above. They made it too cartoony for me. I was hoping that this new, powerful machine would feature cutting-edge graphics but instead they went for a strange graphical display that was well, very basic in my mind. I believe this is called cell-shading, but I'm not certain about that.
I will give it this though: The controls were perfect. The developers clearly spent a great deal of time on ensuring that this was done correctly and at no point do you feel as though the controls, or camera angles (you can control the camera for the most part) are anything other than spot-on.
Another issue that i had was the fact that the world was covered with water
The presence of this necessitated long journeys, sometimes aimlessly and if the wind wasn't blowing the correct direction you had to play a tune on your flute in order to change the direction the wind was blowing - This was simply tedious and unnecessary. Some of the island destinations had only one point of entry which wasn't clearly defined and therefore you would spend an exorbitant amount of time circling said island simply looking for a way of getting on the damn thing. This frequently resulted in me simply turning the game off.
The very first "dungeon" that you enter involves an irritating sequence of events where you aren't even fighting, you were simply evading sentinels. Should you be caught, you would be thrown back in your cell and you would have to do it all over again. This was irritating and time-consuming and again, resulted in me switching the game off frequently.
I don't know how many times i got thrown back in here, but it was a lot
The game sold really well, as all Zelda games do, but if I were to rank this game compared to other Zelda titles, I would rank it near the bottom. Sorry to the fanbois out there, but i would say there is a better-than-average chance that I am just as big a fan as you, just not of this title.
I played this game once, not a big fan of it!
