If I'm gonna call this Magic: The Gathering series "March Madness," of course I have to look at the most insane set available today! Let's take a look at three booster packs from Unstable!
First, some background. Unstable is the third Un-set, following long after Unhinged and Unglued. No cards from these sets other than the basic lands are legal in any other format of the game, and these cards all bear a silver border to differentiate them from the standard black-bordered cards. They also tend to have a completely insane humor that is absent from the usual magic fare, poking fun at anything and everything including the game itself.
The theme for Unstable is mad science. There are contraptions, crazy creature combinations, and bizarre effects requiring people to intervene from outside the game, or changing depending on the number of capitalized letters on a card. No, I am not kidding there.
The set also includes a separate Contraption Deck, and the contraptions played alter the mechanics of the game for extra insanity. many cards allow you to add new contraptions or steal contraptions from other players.
Also, I pulled a foil Island, currently worth around $75-80 USD. Shiny! If you want it, I'll consider selling it for Steem or SBD!
There are also Host Creatures and Augment cards that allow you to create crazy combination creatures. The split card art is designed to allow the augmentation to overlap the original, and the art and text then both line up to make something new. This is awesome.
All told, this is the perfect set to draft as part of a fun game night. It doesn't take itself seriously at all, so if you are a super-serious gamer, you might want to look elsewhere. No one likes you anyway. This set is for the rest of us.
