Privateer Press Mini Crate Unboxing

in games •  7 years ago  (edited)

I decided to sign up for the Privateer Press Mini Crate program last month, and I just received my first miniature in the mail yesterday.

For those not familiar with Privateer Press, they publish the tabletop war games Warmachine and Hordes, which are set in the same world as their Iron Kingdoms role-playing game. The universe is a blend of magic and steampunk machinery. Powerful wizards called Warcasters use magic-imbued mechanical stompy war robots called Warjacks. Warlocks channel primal energies to control massive monsters. Swords and gunpowder weapons alike are wielded by the common soldiers caught in the midst of the conflicts that rage between numerous factions.

The Mini Crate promotion sends limited-edition alternate sculpts that can be used in place of various models in different armies, or as minis in any role-playing game. After each production run, the molds are destroyed and no more will ever be produced. Since I signed up for a 6-month subscription, I also got a bonus miniature in this first delivery. So let's take a look at the Totem Huntress and the bonus Mrs. Walls!

Such an interesting box. Nicely printed all around with a wood crate theme, a stamped logo on the top, and each side shows something peering or poking through the side. The shipping label is on the bottom. Let's see what's inside!

There's a window in the cardboard lining letting us see the clamshell package containing the LOOT! There's obviously a pewter miniature, a resin miniature, some extra pewter pieces, and what looks like a 30mm round base and a 40mm round base.

There are also cards with concept art for the miniatures on the front and some flavor text on the back. These are both gender-swapped alternate female models for existing male character minis. Not all the releases in this series will fulfill Rule 63, though. More on that later.

The minis are extremely well made. I'm having trouble finding any mold lines on either the pewter or resin model. The only cleanup will be some extra trimming on the resin model due to casting vents and some filing to fit the pewter components properly. I just don't think my paintings skill would do these minis justice. Click the images below for a larger photo taken with no flash.

So, if these catch your interest at all, you might want to take a look at the next Mini Crate. If you sign up by April 19th, you can get an alternate sculpt of Alten Ashley as Alten van Helsing, Vampire Hunter. He has a giant crossbow instead of a musket! The mini looks awesome on its own, and I would personally prefer it to the original if I needed that character in a Hordes army.

And don't forget, if you sign up for a 6-month subscription between now and August, you can get your very own Mrs. Walls as a bonus! It's too late to get your own Totem Huntress though, unless you scour e-Bay or make me a really, really tempting offer in Steem.

Very fun the MiniCrate, Privateerpress is trying to find a way to stay, but the heavy meta game killed the game, have you tried iron company yet?

Nope. I am behind the curve on Warmahordes, but I like the models regardless of how the game meta goes. My main focus for army building is Warhammer 40,000 Orks and Kings of War Forces of the Abyss.

I have noticed a lot of companies out there now doing these crates, and they have them for all ranges of ages and types too!

This is the first crate promo I have tried. I knew enough about the company to be reasonably sure I would like the product.
