Playstation Plus games for October

in games •  4 years ago

I'm one of those people that has had a Playstation Plus membership for a long time and a rather large part of my overall library are these "free" games that come each month. Every month with a PSP membership you are entitled to at least 2 free games that you can continue to play until the end of time as long as you manage to come up with the membership fee.

For me, this has always been an easy choice to make on whether or not to subscribe because it's less than $5 a month (given the package I chose) and I figure that even a not-so-great game is probably worth $2.

Last month's games for example, I am yet to play either one of them. They were PUBG and Street Fighter 5, neither of which really appeals to me a great deal. You never know what you are going to get in the picks of the month, but I think we have a couple of winners for October.

Need for Speed: Payback

I've always quite enjoyed the NFS games in most every release that they have made because for me it seems to be a less "serious" car racing simulator. This is just my opinion but they appear to focus less on what is actually possible, and instead focus on making the game fun.

Not long ago I played some sort of rally car game that was meat to be a simulator rather than a crazy, fly around the corners, crash the hell out of your car and still proceed on the track type game. I hated the simulation game the first time I barely touched a tree on the side of the road and I was out of the race. I didn't do another race after that first one because the races were in what appeared to be real time as well so it wasn't a question of doing a few laps on a fictional course, it was trying to simulate the level of damage that a car is capable of in real life. I don't want that and Need for Speed tends to make your cars almost impossible to destroy.

It's just more fun for me to eliminate the realism and just have some fun and therefore I am really looking forward to this one.

Vampyr

It's October so they needed to give us something a little spooky oriented but they couldn't give us something too "new" as is tradition on the Playstation Plus side of things. Vampyr might be just the kind of game to round out this October as being one of the better months of 2020 as far as the free games are concerned.

The really cool part of this RPG is that it gives you the opportunity as a Vampire to feed on people with reckless abandon, or you can pick and choose your targets to only subject "bad people" to your feeding habits.

Although I have not yet played it, it has average reviews and a lot of the ones I have read that state negative things are trying to compare it to Witcher 3, which is an unfair comparison for any RPG.

For the most part the gameplay and ambiance have been praised as have the long-standing affects of what choices you make on who to feed off of. I think it could be a lot of fun and being a "budget Witcher 3 knockoff" (as one reviewer called it), isn't necessarily a bad thing.

A low commitment racing game combined with a dark RPG sounds like a wonderful mix for me this October and you will probably see me dive into Vampyr straight away leaving Need for Speed on the back-burner for times when I need a quick race release.

So what do you think? Do the October choices do anything for you? I think this is much better than last month and most of the months this year.
