In January 1982 the Commodore 64, better known as the C64, was released. This so-called Home Computer was a huge success, with between 10 Million and 17 Million sold. This makes it still the best-selling computer system ever.

Boasting an impressive 64 kilobytes of RAM, the device also has superior sound and graphical specs when compared to the systems that were our there until that time.

Sam Tramiel, a later Atari president and the son of Commodore's founder Jack Tramiel, said in a 1989 interview, "When I was at Commodore we were building 400,000 C64s a month for a couple of years."

With Basic as primary programming language, but also the possibility to easily program in machine language, this computer has really taught many programmers and computers experts of those days.

We can safely say that without the C64, computers would not be as dominant in everyday life as it is today.

While the demand for the C64 diminished in the 1990's, the C64 was still produced and sold (in Europe) until 1994, when Commodore filed for bankruptcy.

Some companies have later purchased the Commodore brandname, including the VIC20, C64, C128 and other system names, but they never reached the successes of the original C64.

Since years it is possible to use an C64 emulator on the PC and play the games we grew up with.
But the quality was less than perfect and it would take some effort to get everything running smoothly.

Recently we saw some companies issuing scaled-down versions of the Nintendo system (Nintendo Classic Edition) and the Nintendo Classic Mini SNES.

Now we can look forward to the C64 Mini.

Retro Games will provide you with devices that looks identical to the original C64, but is a lot smaller.
