My good buddy is an daily online role playing gamer, and I was joking with his wife on how she feels about it thinking she'd complain. But what she said in response actually surprised me.
She felt a lot safer than her friends who are married to the typical salarymen who work long hours and go out drinking all the time. They don't get to see their husbands much and always fears of cheating which is rampant. So she said I know my guy is home and not out playing around.
I asked if she ever wanted to game online and she tried once before their son was born. But she likes "kawaii" cute characters and not the fighting that the characters have to do against gross evil things.
All in all her husbands does more than other Japanese husbands with the family, but a lot of Japanese don't have a choice even if they don't like working and socializing for most of the day. So her husband's job at an international firm with clear cut hours let him have the time freedom to be home more.
She says, "Besides if really want some attention and affection then I know he's weakness. I know how to play a different type of role play." and she gives me this funny smile. All the while I'm imagining something like this inside my head thinking - wow, good point!
It's an interesting perspective and it was heart warming to know she actual found it good to have online gamer partner.
If I get caught joining a game I get chewed at for not doing more with the kids or housework. I told her today about my buddies wife's thoughts. She gives me this look and says "I guess you choose poorly". So dang it, she's not buying into the idea. I saw a glamour of light... and then shut down. :)
