You have to hand it to modders sometimes. They make some of the wackiest entries in titles we love. Some of those entries are wild and fun, others are just weird. Luckily this one falls in that first category. You can now play Super Mario Bros using the Super Mario 64 engine.
Yep, you read that right.
This is weird but I can easily see how it would be quite fun. I personally love 2.5D style games – from Pandemonium to Tomba and countless others. With the ever, even if incrementally, increasing power of Nintendo hardware I have always wondered what previous games would look like. From Super Mario Bros to Metroid and Zelda, I just think it would be cool to see re-imaginings that keep close to heart the original.
Modders are doing what Nintendon’t (sorry Sega)
That is where modders come in. According to Kotaku, modder Kaze Emanuar used the basic layout of the original Super Mario Bros game and recreated it in the Nintendo 64 entry. This means locking Mario down to a single line of action versus the free roaming abilities he had originally in Super Mario 64.The results are impressive while retaining the charm of Super Mario 64. The jumps, dashes, slides, etc are all still there and available for you to put to use as you see fit.
Just a level mod?
Nope. There are also four characters to choose from while playing this mod. Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi are available. No Princess and no Toad though so you are out of luck if you wanted to play as those characters.
It is still interesting to play Super Mario Bros with the “evil” renditions of Mario and Luigi. What is cool is, each character has different characteristics which impact the game.
