Flashback to "Kung Fu" on NES

in games •  5 years ago

When i got my Nintendo back in the 80's I suddenly had a new penchant for doing jobs all over the neighborhood. Where I would usually moan and groan about having to do some work for money my parents were not the type of people that would just buy me everything that I wanted, so I had to get out there and EARN IT.

When Kung Fu was released I had only played it once at a friend's house and he REFUSED to allow me to borrow it. So I set out to mow some lawns for some gamin' cash.

I recently read an article that was entitled "games that are egregiously missing from the new NES mini" and Kung Fu was featured as one of these games. I don't know if i necessarily agree with that notion but it was a pretty solid game. But i think that if someone was forced to choose between Kung Fu or say, Zelda as an example of NES greatness, it would be an easy choice and not in the favor of Kung-Fu.

The reasoning behind Thomas' objective to go into this house of enemies in the first place is laughably simple but i would imagine that the story behind the games wasn't really all that important back then. Thomas and his girlfriend were on vacation celebrating their love when of course the girlfriend is kidnapped because: why not?

Many NES games were known for their incredible difficulty: This is not one of them. The enemies run from both sides of the screen and you quickly learn how to pretty easily dispatch them. You need to keep moving because there is an excessively long timer and the enemies will never stop heading towards you because Mr. X has an unlimited number of underlings. The most common type of enemy doesn't even try to strike you but will just hug you until you shake them off or die. I must have been sick the day my martial arts classes were teaching this tactic.

The bosses aren't really that difficult either, once you figure out their weakness: The bosses consisted of man with stick, boomerang tossing guy, big black fella, midget wizard, and Mister X who has a striking resemblance to Chuck Norris.

Fortunately for Thomas, this isn't actually Chuck Norris because if it was, the game would not be beatable.

Maybe it was just because we had really low standards back then but this game, upon defeat, was still something you wanted to do again. I wouldn't say that my friends and I were competing for a high score because that was easily manipulated by just sticking around for a long time at a "hugger" spawn point and endlessly sweeping the leg like Cobra Kai in Karate Kid 1.

I liked this game a lot and it was one of the first non Atari 2600 games I ever played. Therefore, I realize that my memories of its greatness might be a little inflated because well, Atari games were really bad.

Thanks for reading! If you have any pointers for me I would appreciate it as I am quite new here. For example I am kind of at a loss as to what tags I should be using and whether or not we are allowed to link Youtube videos here or if we have to use only Dtube ones.

Something about this game i loved. I could play it for hours! I was no official speedrunner for this game but i tried to speed run this without knowing there was a speed running category. Those tiny guys pissed me off the most especially when they jump over you when you try to jump over them. When i went to the classic arcade museum in Laconia New Hampshire last year I saw the arcade version of this game! I never knew what happend to the copy i owned. Probably got sold in some yard sell like other games i had. I will rebuy this one day. I pretty much have all my old game rebought and this is on my list.

it took me ages to figure out how to defeat the "wizard" but once you figured it out he was always very easy when you encountered him again later. The small guys were really annoying, they were much more effective at hugging you to death than their normal-sized counterparts haha
