Guy rates "most overrated" NES games and I disagree with almost everything he says

If you can imagine something, chances are there is a Youtube video out there about it - it doesn't matter what the topic is but yesterday I was searching around for "most overrated video games" on various platforms and GenerationGapGaming, who actually produces great content and has a wonderfully "hick-ish" voice over, went after some NES games that he considers were not as good as people claim they were. I disagree with almost everything he talked about.

Kid Icarus

I could tell right from the start that me and the guy doing the voiceover at GGG were not going to see eye-to-eye when the first game he talks about being overrated is what I consider to be one of the best games on the NES. Kid Icarus was just an amazing game (for the time period, i do NOT recommend playing it today.) Was it a frustratingly difficult platformer? Yes. Did it have rather basic mechanics? Yes, but so did everything else at the time. Were those guys that would throw eggplants on your head that you can't take off one of the most full of doo doo enemies of all time? Yes! But it is still and incredible game that deserves it's place at the top of any NES list.

Seriously bro? You are going to take the best-selling game franchise of all time and suggest that it is over-rated? When the Game Boy had it packaged in for free and we would connect two GB's together for that very inventive competitive play mode there was honestly nothing else like it on the market.

Plus that song that is played over and over again never got old - I'm sure anyone who was alive at that time can still remember it and for the most part fondly. Tetris never got old and they still somehow manage to sell the bejaysus out of this game today. NOT Overrated at all!

How is this game over-rated? I mean there had been nothing like this game up to that point in time. It was inventive, had pretty great physics considering the time period and other than the fact that you couldn't upgrade your bike and the computer controlled opponents would at times do B.S. things like get massive bursts of speed that you don't ever get, it was a very fair, very fun game and I can still remember the music that is played when you win a track.

He complains that you couldn't save your tracks but well, that was the case with almost every single game in the mid 80's. Are we going to say that Metroid was overrated because of those long as hell passwords that we had to write down?

This game was pure awesomeness and the fact that you could design your own track (poorly) is a testament to the forward thinking that was going on inside of whatever studio was responsible for it.

Dragon Warrior

Then he went on to state that one of the most epic games that existed in the 80's is overrated. Good grief. I guess if you didn't like Dragon Warrior you were either too young to get into the intricacies of RPG gaming, just don't like RPG's in general, or lack the patience that a long, epic, tale requires.

This game was another pioneer in the genre and was a game that I would ponder while i was at school and couldn't wait to get home to get involved in the story again. It was too difficult for little kids for the most part sure, but this was at a time when gaming was trying and succeeding and making gaming not just something that kids did.

he went on to complain about how the graphics were not very good. Dude! It was 1986. Nobody had good graphics in 1986.

You can watch the video if you want to and see if you think I am correct or not. The dude does a great job with his narration and editing and I commend him for that. I kind of agree with him about Zelda 2 but disagree with him about every single other game he mentions.

Maybe he was trolling in order to get people to interact in the comments, which they most certainly did and almost everyone disagreed with him. If his objective was to stir up controversy in order to get his channel more visibility, well, it was a clever ruse. It worked on me!

yep, that guy must be being controversial on purpose for the sake of clicks... everyone likes these games.

taking games that kind of defined a generation and helped to innovate new styles of game play... then call them overrated. I would be interested to see what games he considers underrated. If they are all FPS games, I think we have him pegged.
