I was nominated for this challenge by @dotwin1981.
Welcome to the 6th day of my gameswaybackchallenge:
I bought this games because it only costed 10 € and I expected nothing from it but I think it's one of the greatest games ever (Unfortunately it was no commercial hit; I don't understand why; It has also won an unofficial award as a "Lost classic" or "The best game you've never played". I think that describes it very well).
- great story:
Hostile Waters takes place in a Utopian future where war has been abolished. Nano-technological assemblers, which are used in "creation engines" to create matter from energy and waste.
But then cities are attacked by missiles from a south pacific island chain. As response to the missile attacks the global government authorises a reactivation of the Antaeus program, a series of warships able to create any weapon using their on-board nano-technological creation engine.
First it seems that the attacks are caused by some militant extremists then unknown biological life-forms (which also can build organic buildings and factories) are discovered amongst the enemy bases who overtake control. the big question is: Aliens or biological experiments / weapons.
- **great gameplay:
Each Mission takes place on and or near a fortified enemy island containing various forms of anti-air and ground defence, unit-production factories and oil-derricks (which are responsible for the enemies ressources: no more oil-derricks no more unit building). Of course most time you have to destroy all enemy units & buildings (but not in every mission).
From a certain mission on you the Anateus is able to shoot two times per mission with the ships artillery which of course cause very heavy damage. The rest you have to destroy with your vehicles which you can built on Antaeus by using the nano-technology (The ressources (destroyed enemy vehicles or buildings) for the creation engine can be collected with a collector vehicle. You can control any vehicle on your own or by soulcathcer chips (a classified 1990s military program researched into for the storage of human brain functions on a silicon chip.) Land vehicles can be delivered to land by an air-lifting helicopter. You can upgrade your vehicles with weapons (machine gun, rocket launcher, laser, or artillery, The ammunition is limitless but unlike in other games it is explainable with the nanotechnology) armor or energy shields (also a repairing kit can be built in).
My two favourite vehicles:
the hovercraft Salamander
the Hornet attack helicopter
