Oculus Rift CV2 Prototype Revealed! 140° FOV, Eye Tracked Foveated Rendering, 858ppi and Varifocal Lenses!

in gaming •  7 years ago

Oculus just did the unthinkable. Revealing much sooner than anybody expected a true successor to the Rift. Not another standalone product like Oculus Go or Santa Cruz, but what can only be the Rift CV2 judging by the variety of next gen features listed.

Do you begin to realize how fucking pumped I am for this? By basically every single metric the Rift CV2 is going to be an enormous leap over the CV1. VR is advancing much faster than I thought it would, and I'm something of an optimist where VR is concerned.

Let's take a closer look at the image onscreen. It showcases the motorized display assembly used with the varifocal lenses. This, combined with eye tracking, means you can now properly focus your eyes on stuff that is close up or far away in VR:

Here's what that looks like in practice. It's not totally sharp of course. The displays will be nearly three times as pixel dense as the CV1 displays but we're a ways off still from perfect sharpness. Still, it can now be as sharp as possible at whatever focal distance your pupils indicate to the eye tracking cameras.

Now below, let's have a look at how the lenses compare. On the left, the current CV1 lenses with a FOV of 110°. On the right, the CV2 lenses with a FOV of 140°. Miraculously, this increase has been achieved without increasing the size or weight of the headset!

Then below, you'll see what this will translate to in terms of how much larger and more immersive it will appear to your eyes. Not too shabby! We were told not to expect incremental improvements between models but big jumps, and it would seem Oculus has delivered on that promise.

When will the CV2 drop? That info was not revealed. Some say Winter 2019. I personally doubt that, but I also didn't expect the CV2 prototype reveal so soon. CV1 was released roughly 2 years after the reveal of it's prototype, so following that timetable we should expect the CV2 by 2020, certainly no later than 2021.

@alexbeyman,
I think Human are going to be the world of Robots! Look I hate to wear these lenses :D Actually I hate that Virtual Reality! In my masters I have learnt a lot about them, so I started thinking, it's something robotic :D

Cheers~

CV2 seems like a new breakthrough! This kind of technology is soo tempting and fascinating, but also addictive. It can be used not only in games, in learning as well. Imagine student becoming a doctor or Archeologist.

This, combined with eye tracking, means you can now properly focus your eyes on stuff that is close up or far away in VR:

Wow this will be awesome, i hope i can afford it when it does come out, the CV2 is worth having

HEhehe. I can only imagine how you feel Alex.
Like a kid in the candy shop.
Just patience to be released. Looks super awesome

the CV2 lenses with a FOV of 140°. Is certainly advanced and really an improvement to the CV2 I guess as a die hard gamer you will be jumping with glee hahahaha

I haven’t heard about oculus but with this that I’ve read... this looks like a next level thing to me. Technology is on the uprising everyday, gaming experience improves with the uprise. This is cool

Well, after begining to save for an Oculus a better version comes out?
Whoah...i must get this then..
Is it public yet?

It is not released, but some rumors say it could come as soon as Winter of 2019. There is also a much cheaper version which does not need an expensive powerful computer to work, it's called the Oculus Go and costs $200. It has the computer built in. That is what I will probably buy family members as a gift this Christmas since none of them have powerful computers.

Whoah..that would be great.
I'd check the Oculus Go out, $200 isnt so much.
Thanks

Lets just hope that they aren't jerks about it like HTC and charge $1400.00 and price everyone out of the market again. That pimax 8k should be getting ready to release pretty soon, I'm really curious to see how they do.

They really look great, we'll see if the prices are affordable. I'll wait a while for other people to use them and give their opinions and maybe try them at a friend's house. good information.

I wish you a happy day and a better life

This means the CV2 will feel like a zoomable binoculars. With a verifocal lens and eye tracking, will make this game look really real.

We were told not to expect incremental improvements between models but big jumps, and it would seem Oculus has delivered on that promise.

I just hope it actually delivers. Man, I am so eager to get these experiences right...

Yes, my dream about virtual reality devices is about to come true.
I'm so glad that they are constantly working on it.

Aw, shit. All aboard the hype train, woo-woo!

While it sucks that it probably won't be out for awhile, at least that will give me time to hope Steem goes up where I can afford one, lol.

"Ready player one" will give the huge boost to VR gaming. I really hope they will develop as fast as they can.

That's wonderful. I hope it doesn't exceed my budget. Great deal of advancements.

I really want to try VR, that thing will probably be expensive.

wow, with the way tech is moving, i am kinda imagining how the next 100 years would look like..

But 2020? thats really a long time too wait.

wow great,Technology is not a neutral word. Different people will give it different meaning depending on their viewpoint and context.
Technology concerns itself with understanding how knowledge is creatively applied to organised tasks involving people and machines that meet sustainable goals.

An exciting breakthrough made by Oculus. I'm sure this game will boom when released later.
